    What is R-Z255?

This is probably a dumb question, but what does 23andMe's "R-Z255" Y haplogroup translate to? I'm trying to find out more about it, but can't find any real information, just projects for people to find each other.

This is my biological father's Y-haplogroup. For various reasons, I'm not in contact with his family, so I can't even ask the cousins who have it for the 23andMe blurb. I'd be curious to know where it came from and where it's common.

    Thanks.

Thank you! That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I was probably looking in the wrong place, but couldn't figure out what R-Z255 fell under anywhere.

We have revamped the subgroups of the Z255 and L159.2 project to conform to the haplotree. It is a little painful but it is fun to see the tree growing new branches as we go. We are seeing some of the new “FT” SNP branches along with “FGC” SNPs popping up.

I just completed a full review of Z255 and found that the entire haplogroup can be predicted based with 67 markers. Since the entire haplogroup can be predicted, it also can be charted to show how everyone is related to each other via the SAPP tool. Unfortunately, SAPP does not allow all predicted testers to be included in the chart. The attached chart includes 512 testers confirmed to be Z255 and another 63 Beatty and Byrne testers that are predicted. Unfortunately, this chart can not include the other 584 testers that are predicted to be Z255 based on the Z255 prediction model.

    http://www.rcasey.net/DNA/Temp/Z255_..._20190413A.htm

Here is the source EXCEL file for these testers. It is divided up into four sections:

    1) 591 testers that are confirmed (including 63 more predicted testers)

    2) The other 584 testers that are predicted to be Z255.

    3) The closest matches that are not predicted to be Z255 (to train the prediction model)

    4) The closest matches that are confirmed not to be Z255 (to train the prediction model)

Column CB is the prediction model, column K is the signature match to the Z255 signature
and column L is the genetic distance from the Z255 signature:

Here is the input file to SAPP if you want to add more testers. Also, you can remove
the TEXTOUT option to generate the box descendant chart (png image).

Apparently it's mostly found in Ireland and Scotland

    Interesting that Z255 is a part of the substantial ZZ10 family underneath DF13, along with Z253, MC14, CTS3386, BY4047 and BY12512.

See Mike Walsh's Z290 & L21 Descendant Tree (scroll down to find it).

Thanks, Rich. Yeah, Z255 is associated with Leinster clans Byrne, Kavanagh, and Kinsella, but it can also be found around the Irish Sea, much like its other L21 brothers.

I'm guessing your ZZ10 founder was a Beaker chieftain of some power.

I wish Reich & Co. or somebody would do a thorough study of how Beaker came to be.

I've updated the R-Z255 project over the last several weeks so there is now a subgroup for every branch on the FTDNA haplotree. I've also come up with some signature markers that are predictive for some of the branches underneath the general modal haplotype that aligns with Z255 called the Irish Sea Modal Haplotype.

    https://www.familytreedna.com/public...frame=yresults

I haven't added the STR signature markers yet but will. They are posted on the project Activity Feed and R1b-Z255 facebook.

I will add a graphic (JPEG,PNG,PDF) Descendant Tree for Z255 like I have for R-L513 but that's for another day.
