    Uralic

    Which of the Uralic languages is the most archaic, the most like Proto-Uralic, and why is it not Hungarian. I would hazard a guess that the one closest to early Uralic would be a language in the center of the group, but since early Russian East Slavic dialects interrupted the Finno-Ugric continuum between Baltic Finnic and Volga Finnic, I am less sure.

    If we speak strictly on a level of word forms, then Finnish has some words in the very same form than already Proto-Uralic: *pata > Fi. pata 'pot', *kala > Fi. kala 'fish'. On the other hand, some sounds have changed greatly in Finnic: PU *šiŋiri > Fi. hiiri 'mouse'.

    In other levels of language Finnish has gone through changes, of course.
