I did it a couple of weeks ago. The groups I am most similar to are Celts, Franks, and Gauls. Evidently in this group 'Celt' means Insular Celts, because Gauls were Celtic, too, just on the continent.

See me rocking my new Palatinate flag? Found out my great-great-great-grandmother Maria Margaretha Victoria Kirchner was born in Heidelberg, capital of the old Palatinate.

I have found it most interesting to have expanded my samples in MTA and to have found this new study at the same time although I am from the south of Spain.

Think Celts in this context now means Irish and Scottish, ie Gaelic celt. They've now added Briton, ie Brythonic celt, as a specific category.

Here's my new update based on my AncestryDNA results:

    Celt: 37.4%
    Briton: 20.9%
    Viking Danish: 14.4%
    Frank: 12.1%
    Saxon: 8.53%
    Langobard: 2.29%
    Vandal: 1.64%
    Balari: 1.12%
Rest (Pict, Norwegian Viking, Illyrian, Vascones).

    Deep Dive update 6-1-22.jpg

In contrast, my MyHeritage data produced the following Deep Dive result:

    Celt: 44.4%
    Viking Danish: 24.4%
    Viking Swedish: 12.9%
    Briton: 8.03%
    Saxon: 7.28%
    Balari: 0.99%
    Pict: 0.66%
    Langobard: 0.51%
    Rest (Frank, Vascones)

It's interesting, but the website design is a bit clanky. My understanding is they are looking at actual shared ancestry (similar to Ancestry for example) but with ancient samples, rather than just mathematical similarity?

A lot of stuff is gated behind different 'tiers' of contribution. I got the most basic level out of curiosity.

In overall similarity i'm closest to Flemish (and not far from English), which makes sense given other testing. Though seems this looks more at shared centimorgans with ancient samples, which is a variety of individuals. Although i have one very large match with a pre-Christian Icelandic sample.

334.22cm in 15 segments to an Icelandic individual HSJ-A1B. Found some info on him below. Interestingly i think he is also I1-L22, and forms a branch with two men in the UK (Scotland and England). I wonder if it will be a match along that line as well, or just pure coincidence. This line has a NPE in my tree from the 1860s, so no idea where it came from before then. Would be cool to find out, currently waiting on an FTDNA kit so perhaps will find out at some point.

    Sample: HSJ-A1
    Location: Hrólfsstaðir, East, Iceland
Study Information: A comb, knife, and pieces of charcoal were found in the grave.
    Age: Pre-Christian <1000 CE
    Y-DNA: I-BY202281
FTDNA Comment: forms a branch with 2 men (Scotland and England). I-BY202281. The two modern samples share an additional 11 markers that HSJ-A1 is ancestral for

Granted this site gives me a better breakdown of information that seems useful and not just a set of numbers you need to interpret. Other than that I don't care much for the pay tier system they have. To satiate my curiosity....

My pca plots are always all over the place. The best have reference population tied to a geographic reference....
As of now my 2 closest ancient plots that show below 4, 75 BC LIA Briton North Perrott Somerset Britian 3.497 distance and 720 AD Saxon Hinxton shows 3.701 distance

Overall an informative, and enlightning site. The site managers need to hire a programmer to smooth and emphasize the interfaces, in my opinion.

It seems they divided the “Celt” category recently. I used to be Celt, Saxon, Langobard, Danish Viking, and Norwegian Viking.

If you accept it all as a harmless bit of fun, rather than take any of it too seriously, I rather enjoy a weekly visit!
