    Ethnicity Update May 2019

Thought it made sense to start a new thread.
Both on here and on facebook groups there has been excitement around the notice of automatic updates people will receive on/by May 30th.
There has been some discussion on whether this update is in fact a new update, or simply a forced update going to those who have not accepted their 2018 updates yet.

Claims on facebook seem to be alluding the first of the two-- with one individual stating her Husband's estimate went from 0% to 24% Germanic with the new update.
I still have yet to see this update "with my own eyes." I'm curious if anyone has received, and what the panel update features vs the 16,000 reference samples and 500+ regions of the 2018 update.

Another user on facebook shared a note from Ancestry UK clarifying it was intended for those that have not accepted their previous updates. Interesting...

Yes, if you have a homogeneous Irish background I would imagine they've done a pretty darn good job thus far.
Still lots of opportunity in the Northwest European, Germanic and Scandinavian categories.

I hope the update is better than the current one.
    Because it is real awful.

I agree. I’m hoping they not only get more accurate with continental Europe, but eventually provide updated migrations or genetic communities for the rest of us. My Ancestry result is better than the LDNA update, but still worse than 23andMe.

Mine is pretty accurate, IMHO, but it is mostly British Isles, Ireland, and the southern USA. Maybe that's easy to do.

Yea, I think for colonial US and UK/Ireland ancestry, AncestryDNA has really become quite accurate after seeing similar results.

Since Ancestry decided to try and split the rest of Europe up, there is too much variance to be very accurate and perhaps why I prefer 23andMe's broader categories, as I've said elsewhere. I've seen some users here from continental Europe who are happy with their results and to me that says these tests really still are hit or miss.

My wife's results here are very accurate, as are her 23andMe results with some smoothing of her F&G - half of her family is colonial British and the other half is British and settled in West Virginia in the early 1920s:

    Estimate1.PNG

My results are Eastern Europe/Baltic heavy and I don't know why. My known German-line cousins do not have any EE or Baltic so I don't think it's from here. My dad's 1st cousins from his paternal Polish side have a little Baltic and EE - max 12% total, I'm a generation below them so I'd expect a little less. From my maternal grandfather I should have a total of 30% EE, Baltic and Finnish. That leaves 18% still going to those categories and I don't think this is all coming from my Polish line. After LDNA, they are the highest I receive anywhere. My French is also very minimal, but still better than LDNA. I show a broad migration location and the same as my maternal grandfather. The irony there is my maternal grandfather is the one person I know the least about in terms of ancestry.

Maybe it's like some other members suggested, the more admixed you are the less accurate these calculators become.

Okay so here is someone's post on Instagram of their "Updated Ancestry DNA results":

The "new" results seem to retain Sweden and Norway as distinct regions, but reverts some back to "Great Britain" and "Ireland/Scotland/Wales"

Looked to see if mine had an update.
No, it had already been updated - twice, last year.

Current update is horrible for Cornish.
The ethnicity estimates and map consider my Cornish to be Irish/Scottish.
    As well as my Scottish.
That would be OK if they just called that Celtic.

But then the migration maps say most of my Cornish come from London and Southern England.
The most recent update on that (some time around December/January, I think) at last acknowledged some limited connection with Cornwall.
But they have obliterated my Scots.
I could believe that maybe I did not have any DNA left from that line, if it were not for all of the Scottish matches.
