International Area: Design & Implementation Summary

    Dear Members,

This thread summarizes the purpose, scope and implementation of the International Area (IA).

    Purpose
The IA was launched in March 2015. It was primarily designed to facilitate non-English discussion of topics pertaining to population or consumer genetics and anthropology.

    Scope
Since its launch, we received a substantial number of private and public requests for the IA to also feature region-specific sections. These were largely met.

    Implementation
Several factors influence our decision to publicly host or withdraw an IA subsection. A framework has existed since the early days of the forum's online activity. This was summarized by an administrator in 2017:

    1) Language subsections with the highest numbers of speakers were envisaged for this forum since the creation of our International Area.

    2) In the event the subsection is anticipated to generate a high administrative workload, we require the presence of a) An appointed moderator or administrator that is conversant in the section's relevant language(s) and b) there is sufficient demand for it by our members.

    3) Priority is given to subsections that either have exceptionally high demand among our users in terms of generated content (e.g. Celtic section) or there is a perceived absence for a dedicated area in other venues (e.g. Kurdish section)
In the event an IA subsection becomes inactive, it will be considered for withdrawal if it doesn't attract more than 10 posts within a six month catchment period. None of the content in any of the shelved subsections is deleted. Instead, these are marked as inactive and hidden from public access. They may be revived if sufficient interest is generated in our Request Thread.
