I was looking at how close I was as a custom user to various populations. Those are the populations where I am the 10th or closer custom user.

It might not mean much, some people just have better fits than others because of drift or whatnot. That's why running models is superior to just looking at individual euclidean distances

^ You are most probably right . I find it hard to judge how good models are. I believe that 0.5-1.0 is the optimal distance, but is it better nearer to 0.5 or 1.0? Then there is the issue of scaled vs unscaled. Models where you have a population at a greater amount than the combined total of that for your parents. Situations where a population will appear in scaled and not unscaled and vice versa. Or it appears at above noise level in one (2%+) and not the other.

Well for what it's worth I can't ever get distances that low in ancient models, I generally have crap distances and I'm not alone here (except to some specific samples). Unless I use individual samples, but using individual samples can be misleading because there's always heterogenity in a population. A couple of samples that drop my distances like a rock are Szolad_SZ30 and Scotland_LBA3130, but I'm pretty sure I have little to no ancestry from either early medieval Lombards from Hungary or late Bronze age Caledonians or Vacomagi

Huijbregts commented on it a while back
Some of us are lucky to have DNA that is very similar to early Middle Age samples. For them it is possible to fit very nice 'ancient' models (Finn, Dewsloth).
The rest of us have to do with much less satisfying models.

This is scaled. Didn't look at Finnish because there wasn't any close custom user. These are all the average populations.

    Icelandic 1
    Bell_Beaker_Mittelelbe-Saale: 1
    Bell_Beaker_England: 1
    Bell_Beaker_NLD: 1
    CZE_EBA 1
    England_MBA: 2
    England_CA_EBA 2
    Welsh 3
    England_Saxon 3
Scotland_LBA 4 (you're actually No 1 closest User firemonkey for this)
    Norwegian 5
    Irish 6
    SWE_Viking 6
    Scottish 7
    Swedish 7
    England_Roman 8
    Orcadian 9
    Shetlandic 10

There are loads of ancients I would be in Top 10 closest users but I got tired of checking. I'm sure there many where I'm the no 1 closest as well. I've noticed that User ais is no 1 for a lot of the ones I was looking at as well. Literally too many to check.

An unscaled ancient model using ancient averages that crop up in unscaled checkfit.
