Situations where a population will appear in scaled and not unscaled and vice versa. Or it appears at above noise level in one (2%+) and not the other.
When you talk about "fit" and "distances", do you mean those figures that Ph2ter always assigns at the top of his list of populations in various calcs? And the smaller the number the closer to reality?

Yes ,that's what I mean re 'fit' . I have no idea whether closer to .500 or closer to 1.00 is best . Is 0.650 better than 0.890 ?

A couple of samples that drop my distances like a rock are Szolad_SZ30 and Scotland_LBA3130, but I'm pretty sure I have little to no ancestry from either early medieval Lombards from Hungary or late Bronze age Caledonians or Vacomagi

Huijbregts commented on it a while back
Some of us are lucky to have DNA that is very similar to early Middle Age samples. For them it is possible to fit very nice 'ancient' models (Finn, Dewsloth).
The rest of us have to do with much less satisfying models.
The fit distances are much smaller, but it doesn't mitigate the mystery when you know the subject is the product of at least 3 distinct autosomal regions that resided on two different continents for over 250 years.
Dad is mostly German and British, with some Belgian and Ashkenazi. I think in G25 French and French East both are a combination of what we think of as mixed Germanic and Gaul/Celt (and maybe also a combo of German and British, being an autosomal as well as geographic midpoint):

Yes, this is part of that autosomal thread I keep seeing running throughout the N.France/Belgium/W.German area. It's kind of an autosomal network with these nodes, ancient and modern.

One more thought, you've identified two reasons why I'm genetically in the midst of this population grouping: I'm part French and SW. German and those also got combined with British. At the same time it seems like my (Southern) British is an amalgam of Belgian, German, French; i.e., in nMonte runs, my British gets completely absorbed into these three continental European countries. Cornwall in particular seems to be the prime exemplar of an amalgamated, generic NW European population. I've noticed on Poi's map averages that across our particular area, Cornwall is the nearest/lowest average number.

Yup. It's as though Dad's "Brits" are Flemish or something. Actually, I'm sure some of them are Flemish or German -- our Colonial Waterburys are supposed to have been [von] Wasserburgs before moving to Britain.

I have no idea if the following is true, but I keep finding information like it on the web:

Lots of migration across the Channel to England over time. To wit, I have a surname Hargis in the family, ostensibly English, but no, it was brought over to England from either a Norman or Breton named Harguess in the 1500s. There you go.
