    Germans are heterogenous, you can see that in PAST with correlation matrixes. Theoretically they are all academic samples, but one (or more) might have unknown foreign ancestry

    Germany is the heart of Europe. It is a the centre or in the path of most major historical events in Europe for the past 5000 years. Through it, flow the major waterways through which European peoples travelled, conquered, or traded. Major migrations occurred West-East of the Rhine multiple times. The German sample (approx. 80 individuals) heterogeneity is well patterned and sensical.

    Thanks for these runs. Yeah, this German48 individual has some interesting subtexts going on. No surprise that your Dad has many of the same populations since he's next to everybody! BTW, what is the Iberia_Northeast c.6CE PL population? I have it in my check fit average, too.

    A correlation matrix? What does that do? I am like a pig looking at a wrist watch here. Also, are these academic samples called by their country of origin but not necessarily their relative closeness to said name, e.g., "German"?

    It's used to check how homogenous a population is, you'll notice the Irish will get higher correlations than the Germans which is what one'd expect.

    Afaik the samples are labeled 'German' or whatnot because the individuals have four grandparents born in the country. I have no idea if there is additional information about their location/origin, probably not

    They are the group from the recent Iberia study that were identified as Visigoths and atypical to most other samples collected:

    Also, speaking of the Iberian Visigoths, this just popped up on Davidski's awesome site in the comments to his most recent post:

    And now we have a "Balkan Goth" in Iberia and a "Balkan Goth" in Chernyakhov:

    UKR_Chernyakhiv_Shyshaky:MJ37

    Iberia_Northeast_c.6CE_PL:I12163 100%
    Distance 2.7157%

    This is not a Sweden -> Poland -> Ukraine -> Balkans -> Italy -> Spain path, but rather:

    Sweden -> Germany -> Balkans -> Chernyakhov
    Sweden -> Germany -> Balkans -> Italy -> Spain

    @ Arza

    “Sweden -> Germany -> Balkans -> Chernyakhov”

    The archaeological and historical evidence points to Goths coming to Balkans via Ukraine; and originally from the Vistula
    The two samples thus far don’t contradict that perspective

    If you relabel all the Spanish samples in G25 under one name, they look heterogenous as well. Most northern European samples, although homogenous by country, are entirely overlapping.
