Likewise it would be fascinating to examine the relationship between their Father's shajra (and other sources of background information like past hometowns, occupations, etc.) with their Y-DNA results. Perhaps after all of this we can create some non-genetic 'rule of thumb' that determines the chances of someone being an actual 'Syed' in South Asia.
Basically the answer to the probability of testing for J-FGC30416 given being a Uttar Pradesh Syed?

P(J-FGC30416|UP Syed) = ? About 1% tops maybe. Maybe that is being a bit too generous.

    Now P(MENA Y-DNA|UP Syed) = 50% perhaps?

And sort of irrelevant but P(MENA Y-DNA| UP Syed) AND [MENA admixture that exceeds 3%]? Maybe 10%, possibly restricted to very elderly people or heavily endogamous families.

Is he in FTDNA? Does he belong to Shia group?

Sure, "true" paternal Sayyed ancestry means J1-Y12869. But in this topic we talking about all lineages aiming themselves as "Syeds".

He did 23andMe and yes he is Shia.

He does show meaningful Anatolian admixture of over 1.5% (that rate doesn't seem that common in UP) in addition to Iranian/Caucasian/Mesopotamian. Going to encourage him to do FTDNA and so we can more meaningfully gauge where his E-M34 came from. Good chance that it is from Turkey/Azerbaijan or Western Iran. Wheras most foreign ancestry in Shias is claimed to be from Eastern Iran (Khorasan).

It is noteworthy that 61 of the 165 Tajiks in that table claimed to be Syed.

Syeds are a complicated topic in Uttar Pradesh Muslim families. There is incredible diversity, exactly where there shouldn't be.

I do believe the best candidate is somewhere downstream of J1-Y12869 however.

It's a good possibility that he belongs to the same downstream branch as you. His family claims to be in the Naqvi branch.

The Azerbaijan project (along with the Iran and Iraq) equivalents could help some of the UP Syeds figure out a point of origin.

From a dated study done back in 2009. I'm assuming that J*(xJ2) is J1?

It found significantly high levels of J*(xJ2) in Shias and substantially lower throughout other South Asians. But 0.3% of Non-Muslim South Asians also were J1.

Nearly ~29% of Shias were J*(xJ2) or J2, Sunnis had a 20% rate of J haplogroups.

J*(xJ2) AND J2 seemed to be substantially higher in Muslims than other South Asians. Shias had higher rates of C5 (Hazara?), P (Central Asian or Turkic?), G and also a small E1b1b1a component.

Strange that J2b was not found in Muslims at all. I have multiple Muslim matches with this Haplogroup.

10% of Kerala Mapplas have J*(xJ2) here which I'm assuming is from Yemeni traders? Likely different Arab ancestors than the Hadhramout descended males showing up on YFull that have G.
