Yes it is was quite rare to occur in the UK itself, it was heavily frowned upon not least because of memories of the 1857 mutiny as well as British rule being based partly on the idea of racial superiority so any mixing was seen as a threat to that.
That Anglo-Indian line has assimilated into the British population, my 4th cousin looks English now.
