Looking for my great-great-great grandmother's parents

My great-great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Johnston, was born circa 1840, most likely in Sheffield. Her parents are unknown, but a researcher on Familysearch thinks that her mother was born in Germany. This would make a lot of sense given the German/Eastern Euro matches on my paternal X as well as the affinity I get on both Ethnogene and LM K36 for northeast Germany.

However, I cannot find anything on Elizabeth's parents- no censuses, no marriage records, nothing. Is it possible that her father could also have been a German who moved to the UK after marrying in Germany? I have found several people born in Central/Eastern Europe in the 19th century who anglicised their names to Johnston(e), however none seem to fit the time period I'm looking for (1800-1820 for birth, 1820-1840 for marriage).

Any suggestions on how I can continue my search, preferably for free?

    Thank you.

I've also tried Johnstone, but that yielded nothing. I'm leaning to believe that the family name was anglicised or otherwise changed at some point when she was young.

What have you found so far? That would help in trying to brainstorm.

Also, what precisely is the connection? I assume one where you would expect an X match.

She is my paternal great-great-great-great grandmother through the maternal line. In other words, she is my father's furthest known maternal ancestor.

I've also seen reference to her possibly being born in Manchester.

When do you first find her? Census records as an adult, marriage records?

I see some Elizabeth Johnstones in the 1851 census in Yorkshire and a couple of Yorkshire baptisms.

Somebody on Familysearch compiled a family tree of my great-great grandmother Florence (Florrie) Wood. It mentions that her mother Elizabeth Johnston was born in around 1840 in Sheffield, and then lists Elizabeth's parents as Unknown Johnston and his wife, whose birthplace is listed as Germany. Florence's father was Henry Wood and he was born in Sheffield too.

Going by the age of their eldest son in the 1861 census, Henry and Elizabeth would have married in around 1858.

Not seeing anything helpful in the parish or census records.

If it helps, out of the German-descended matches with GEDcoms on GEDmatch, a good number have ancestors from Mecklenburg or Schleswig-Holstein, regions picked up by both K36 and Ethnogene. While I obviously can't pick up on an exact link to the areas, a recurring surname among these matches is Meyer(s). This may be her mother's maiden name but I've found nothing that could possibly connect a person called Meyers to Elizabeth Johnston of Sheffield.

I have no idea why Henry and Elizabeth Wood's marriage wasn't recorded. I don't believe civil ceremonies were legal at the time.
