Do you guys have any information about the J-FGC17491 branch of the YFull tree? I've got my YFull results not so long and I'm a J-Y142306. Thank you in advance!

It looks like a mixed Sephardi-Ashkenazi Kohen sub-branch of the largest Kohen branch across Jewish communities. Are you YF67912? Do you have a Kohen tradition?

Inviting Agamemnon, who’s the resident expert on the broader J-Z18271 branch to which yours belongs, to chime in.

Thanks for your response! Yup that's me, however my family doesn't have any Kohanim tradition, as far as I know. The problem is that I don't know much about my paternal lineage since my great-grandparent was brought to Siberia as a kid to serve in the Russian army and there are no records left about his parents or his place of birth. So maybe there was a Kohanim tradition back in the day but it's impossible to trace now

Yeah, the locations in the branch suggest a possible Cantonist origin.

Yeah my great-great grandfather was a Cantonist kid and he stayed in Siberia after serving 25 years in the Russian army. His last name runs only among his descendants from Siberia and given my lack of matches on yFull and FTDNA, I kinda gave up any hope to find his roots.

    Any leftover Jewish practice?

Also, thought I'd remark on the one remaining J-Z18271 branch at FTDNA that has not shown up on YFull: J-ZS237. It looks like 3 distinct Italian families around Cosenza and Catanzaro belong to it.

It's sad but my own family is pretty much the only one that somehow remained Jewish out of hundreds and hundreds of his descendants. All others got totally assimilated in Siberia.

Interesting. Did your ancestor find a Jew in Siberia or moved back to the Pale?

He settled in Siberia and became a really successful merchant afterwards. The ironic part is that the Pale Jews living in Siberia and the Cantonist Jews started disliking each other and eventually, the Cantonist Jews decided to branch out and and start their own "Soldiers synagogue" in Tomsk.
