As you can see from my results, there's some strong evidence of North Sea Germanic ancestry, which should be obvious given my English, German and Northern French ancestry. Unsurprisingly, the Netherlands comes out as the location I'm the most genetically similar to, being the meeting point between my three main countries of ancestry (excluding Ireland). However, I was surprised to see so much pull towards the North Sea given that my ancestry in Germany is more towards the centre and that my ancestry in France ought to pull things a bit more towards the centre too. That said, given the common Frankish origins in all of these geographical locations, I shouldn't be surprised.

One thing that did catch my eye however was the slightly higher estimation in Western Scotland (Argyll) compared to the rest of the UK. Anyone who's acquainted with British population genetics will be aware that where the bulk of my ancestry is from (West Yorkshire), there is strong evidence of Germanic Anglo-Saxon (and perhaps Viking Danish) ancestry - with a chance that the Romano-British kingdom of Elmet plays a role in the region's genetic signature. That said, Western Scotland is more "Celtic" in ancestry, reflecting ancestry from the Dal Riata. This tells me that my slight Irish ancestry (and perhaps my ancestry in Brittany and Auvergne) might be pulling my estimates towards Western Scotland and away from Eastern/Central England.

As for my ancestry in Midi-Pyrénées and Auvergne, there's little genetic similitude with these regions. I had to learn this the hard way recently after getting a nasty sunburn.

This is mine, which combines the percentages I got using my 23andMe kit and the Ancestry kit (same ancestral component groups, slightly different percentages). Very interesting how you don't have any dark red areas - you seem a lot more spread out. Your British and Irish doesn't appear to have left any major traces either.

It's not that simple, I've seen plenty of people who are fully Portuguese who don't show any dark-red areas either, there's a deal of genetic variation even within relatively homogenous groups. If you add that to people with multiple and distinct sources of ancestry you get plenty of room for variation. Besides K36 is a bit meh in my opinion

How did you get the K36 test to generate this detailed British breakout? Or was that your results from 23andMe? Thanks

That's my known genealogical heritage, on paper. I haven't gone far back enough on some lines but that's what I know of. If you want a breakdown of your British ancestry, try LivingDNA, who base their studies on the genetic breakdown of the British population (Leslie et al., 2015) in the People of the British Isles project.

Ah, thanks for the clarification and sources. I was impressed by your detailed breakout, but couldn't get K36 to give me anything like that. Also, my knowledge of my English and Scottish heritage is fairly limited. My paternal g5-grandfather came over from England in the mid-18th century, but English genealogists trace our family to Normans who came over with William the Conqueror. On my maternal side my g6-grandfather and two brothers emigrated from Ayrshire, Scotland, and what is now Northern Ireland in the late 17th century. Our gedcoms are full of those males marrying women with English-, Irish- and Scottish-looking surnames, but I have no further proof. Genetically, I cluster on southern Scandinavia, which is reflected in the K36 map.
