How do you trace your ancestry back further with this situation?

I have a William Gatty,my 4th gt , who was married in Liverpool in 1810. Searches online have failed to reveal a birth or christening entry for him. My father has a match with someone who has a female Gatty ancestor born in Cornwall in 1704. It's possible I'm an ancestor of one of that female Gatty's brothers , but I'm stuck as to how bridge that 100+ year gap .

Have you found any death records for him? What about marriage records? It may reveal the name of his parents or other information.

My father and I have been unable to find a death record. The marriage record doesn't give his parents . The only thing I know is that he is listed as a gentleman on the marriage licence bond.

Based on William being born c 1789 and his children being listed as having Catholic baptisms I did a search for Gatty 1779 -1799.

No Gatty entries at all for Liverpool 1779-1799.

Did a search minus a place.

Name Cathara Gatty Birth 1791 Baptism 15/03/1791 Dublin Ireland

Name Gatty Birth 1791 Baptism 18/07/1791 Tipperary Ireland

Name Joseph Gatty Birth 1785 Death 09/03/1822 Steyr-St.Michael, Oberösterreich, Austria

Name Anna Gatty Mother Elisabeth Horvath Father Stephanus Gatty Baptism 10/1792 Miháld, Somogy, Hungary

Name Maria Anna Gatty Spouse Joseph Doppler Mother Agatha Jungdörfer Father Johann Urban Gatty Birth 1794 Marriage 19/08/1822 Steyr-St.Michael, Oberösterreich, Austria

Name Maria Gatty Birth 1795 Baptism 03/06/1795 Dublin Ireland

Name Joseph Gatty Spouse Theresia Freudensweill Birth 1782 Marriage 11/09/1809 Steyr-St.Michael, Oberösterreich, Austria

Name Benedictus Joannes Georgius Gatt˙ Mother Victoria Hartman Father Mathias Gatt˙ Birth 20/03/1782 Steyr-Stadtpfarre, Oberösterreich, Austria

Name Katharina Gatty Spouse Joseph Tomke Mother Agatha Inndorfer Father Johann Gatty Birth 1796 Marriage 23/07/1821 Steyr-St.Michael, Oberösterreich, Austria

Name Joannes Aloysius Gatt˙ Mother Victoria Hartman Father Mathias Gatt˙ Birth 02/06/1780 Steyr-Stadtpfarre, Oberösterreich, Austria

Name Joannem Gatty Birth 1799 Baptism 18/03/1799 Roscommon Ireland

Name Thomas Gatty Birth 1799 Baptism 06/03/1799 Dublin Ireland

This, however, doesn't gel with my father's match to someone with a Cornish Gatty , and my Big Y matches to 2 people with Cornish earliest known ancestors .

I looked a little and turned up the born in Ireland Gattys too.

I'd do as much research as possible into the family in Liverpool, especially William. Do you know who the people who witnessed the marriage are? They are likely connected (usually relatives) in some way. Do you know what William did for a living? In that he was identified as a "gentleman," there might be wills or land records.

Knowing they are likely Catholic (whether Irish or not) is enormously helpful and explains why they aren't in the baptismal records. If memory serves, from the Marriage of of 1753 until the Marriage Act of 1836, the only legally-recognized marriages in England were those performed by the Church of England, so non Anglicans would often have Anglican marriage records. I discovered that because I have a number of non-conformist ancestors and initially wondered if they were converting/marrying outside their own faith until I saw that. Their baptismal records are all with non-conformist chapels (Calvinists).

If you have the church for the children's baptisms, you might want to see if you can find other records from that Catholic parish involving Gattys. The online records might not go back far enough.

Question about the Cornwall family would be religion. Given how far back the connection is, the name could just be a coincidence, but I get it's an uncommon name.
