Your "recent ancestor locations" at 23andMe, are they accurate?

For me, this is the most accurate analysis I know of all that I have been able to do as analysis with professional or amateur tools!
But maybe this is not right for everyone!

What is your opinion based on your results?

    My recent ancestor location are:
    France: Highly Likely Match
    Stronger: Brittany

Reality: 90% Brittany, 9.8% Pays de Loire, 0.3% Normandy

    My dad's recent ancestor location:
    France: Highly Likely Match
    Stronger: Brittany
    Medium: Pays de Loire
Weaker: Normandy , Île de France

Reality: 95.4% Brittany, 4.3% Pays de Loire, 0.3% Normandy
    Y haplogroup: R1b: L21 --> DF13 --> BY145002
The oldest L21 known are I2457 et I2565 from Stonehenge (Beaker Culture, 2400-1900 BC)

    MTDNA: U4c1
The oldest U4c1 known are "poz224", Yamnaya culture (2882-2698 BC), and 2 Bell-Beaker in Germany (Karsdorf, 2314-2042 BC)

    Paternal MTDNA: K1b2b
The oldest K1b2 are Eastern European Mesolithic: Kunda Donkalnis5 (Lithuania), 6000 BC and Meso-Ene Lepenski Vir Lepe28 in Serbia, 5900 BC.
    The oldest K1b2b is Alt-3, Corded-Ware Germany (2500 BC)

The recent ancestors feature isn't particularly accurate for me. My known ancestors were ≅ 81.25% Roscommon, 12.5% Galway and 6.25% Mayo.

    23andMe has me as:
    Ireland (Highly Likely Match)
    1. County Mayo (should 3rd highest)
    2. County Galway (expected to be 2nd highest)
    3. County Cork
    4. County Dublin
    5. County Donegal
    6. County Roscommon (should be 1st)
    7. County Sligo
    8. County Kerry
    9. County Leitrim
    10. County Tipperary

I'm not too concerned with the order of Roscommon, Galway and Mayo since my ancestors are from an area that is near to the border of both Mayo and Galway. However, Roscommon should be in the top 3.

    United Kingdom (Highly Likely Match)
    1. Greater london
    2. Glasgow City
    3. Greater Manchester
    4. Merseyside
    5. West Midlands
    6. West Yorkshire
    7. Belfast
    8. South Yorkshire
    9. County Durham
    10. Edinburgh

I have no known ancestors in the United Kingdom. I find Ancestry's genetic communities to be more accurate for me.

I had to use the translator. Hope that’s right.

For me this doesn’t really work. None of my ancestors were in Europe 200 years ago. They have all been in North America for hundreds of years. But it worked specifically well for my son. He has Italian on his father’s side. And the areas match up with his 2nd great grandfather and 3rd great grandmother. I thought they did a good job on his RAL’s.

    Italian 3.8%
    Italy Highly Likely Match

Italy has 20 administrative regions, and we found the strongest evidence of your ancestry in the following 2 regions.

    1. Tuscany
    2. Sicily

BIRTH 22 AUG 1865 • Castelvecchio, Capannori, Lucca, Toscana, Italy
DEATH 29 NOV 1948 • Bakersfield, Kern, California, United States

    Flavia Rossi Denoice

My known ancestry: Greek from Southern Aegean (Kalymnos).

23andme gets Southern Aegean absolutely right, but the Italian is very strange. I actually get more evidence from a northern Italian region than I do to any other Greek region (except Southern Aegean of course)! In fact the confidence that I'm Calabrian is the same as being a Southern Aegean . I sometimes wonder if Kalymnian's actually do have Italian ancestry, but do not know about it...

Table with regions with evidence sorted from highest to lowest.

    Region Strength of Evidence
    Southern Aegean 5.0
    Calabria 5.0
    Sicily 3.8
    Campania 1.8
    Emilia-Romagna 1.5
    Peloponnese 0.8
    Northern Aegean 0.7
    Crete Region 0.6
    Central Greece 0.4
    Decentralized Administration of Attica 0.2
    Ionian Islands 0.2
    Thessalia 0.1

I also get Turkey (western provinces) as Likely for Anatolia section and Turkey (eastern provinces) as Likely for Iranian, Caucasian & Mesopotamian section, but no specific areas for either.

    Unfortunately, not everyone has them.
You must have several referenced segments of a region and you may not have any (for the moment).

It just means that you match with several people who have ancestry in there. Some people get Sicily because many Americans have a branch of their family that originates from that region (although you may be related to them through a different branch)

Inspecting the HTML page. But now that I think about it, the values might be ratios instead of exact values, so maybe it's not fair to compare the Greek & Balkan ones to Italian ones.
