    Greek R1b-CTS9219 + autosomes from 23andMe

    Hi all!

I am a Greek with diverse origins from across the Greek-speaking world. From my paternal side, I am a Greek from Istanbul, with origins from Çanakkale and Nigde as well. My paternal male ancestors emigrated to Istanbul from the village of Tholopotami, Chios island, in the early 18th century. Our surname still exists in the same village in Chios. My maternal ancestors are from Alepochori, Arcadia and Chania/Sfakia, Crete.

I just got my 23andMe results:

    Y-haplogroup: R1b-CTS9219

    mtDNA: J1

    Autosomes:

Greek & Balkan: 56.6%, with highest hits in the Peloponnese and Crete, which makes sense

Italian: 16.6.%, with no specification of which particular region.

    Broadly Southern European: 10.8%

Western Asian and North African: 12.8%

The rest are trace ancestries: East Asian: 0.3%, Ashkenazi: 0.1%, East European: 0.1%, broadly European: 1.6%.

I understand the perils of such tests, as their population identifications are misleading - what is listed as Italian ancestry probably reflects either the Mediterranean genetic continuum, or more directly, the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia. Many Greeks from Asia Minor score Western Asian ancestry, so my results are not surprising, although my X-chromosome is made entirely of this Asian ancestry, which reflects my mother's Cretan origins. I was quite impressed that most of my 23andMe relatives are from Tripoli and Vlachokerasia - the latter is a nearby village in Arcadia, and all over Crete.

Personally, I expected some Central Asian Turkic ancestry, as my paternal grandmother and my father have very pronounced east-asian eyes, and they were both referred to as "Turks" when they were younger. Everybody else in both sides of my family looks very strongly Eastern Mediterranean/island Greek. Could any such ancestry be "masked" by 23andMe? I only score 1.6% Anatolian in my Western Asian ancestry.

Looks don't matter for autosomes, but my appearance is as East Med as it gets

What interests me the most is my ultimate paternal ancestry. R1b-CTS9219 is apparently a young and rare subclade, of very ambiguous origins, as it pops up from Ossetia to Spain, and in quite a few Albanians and some Greeks.

Is there some consensus now regarding the origins of this haplo? Do you think it is worth trying to explore my particular subclade any further?

I will be happy to provide my 23andMe results for any ongoing project

    Thanks!

My mtDNA is J1 also, so hello 12,000 year old cousin lol. You should run your raw data through https://dna.jameslick.com/mthap/ and see if it refines it at all.

Is this downstream of Z2103? I am not familiar with this clade.

OK I did it - please see attached. I would be very grateful if you could let me know what you think about the ancestry proportions!
