    U1a3

Finally got around getting tested on 23andme, and figured I have this haplogroup which is quite frequent in Malayali Christians (Indians) on the site. I have very little foreign admixture, even through the HarappaWorld calculator. However, some Europeans and Middle Easterners have U1a3. Anyone have an idea about its origins?

Thank you for your post. Assyrian Christians also have a few members of U1a3, including board member ZephyrousMandaru.

Posted on the 23andMe boards, by user MMaddi:

The cousin is in the maternal line of Rosalia, so this means that Rosalia was also U1a3. This line is Sicilian and documented back into the mid 1700s. The birthplace is a small town about 25 miles from Palermo. It's somewhat remote, about 1,800 feet above sea level. It's quite possible that this maternal line has been there for several hundred or more years.

I'm U1a3 as well, and I am Albanian.

The Assyrian/Indian/Italian-Sicilian commonality is nothing new.

U1 in kerala is not limited to christians. In fact it was found around 70% in a study in 2002 .The samples was taken from the coastal regions from cochin who were hindus .Though predominantly U1a3 other subclades like U1a1 and U1a'c are also found .From an mtdna study about cochin jews they found a few U1b samples too .

Yes, I am Christian, and I saw on Harappa that there is a Punjabi Brahmin who has U1a3, which really contradicts the idea that it is restricted to Kerala Christians. Even Hindus from Karnataka and Kerala are reported to have it.
