Jacob Baughman was born March 22, 1696, in Elgg Parish, Schottikin County, Zurich, Switzertland. He first married Susahhan Schwizigler January 21, 1721. She died and he married her sister Margaretha Schwizigler in Zurich on March 8, 1721. It was said, "without celebration or fanfare, as they were still in mourning from the death of Susahhan". Margaretha was born December 25, 1698, at Schottikan, Switzerland.
In the year of 1744, and with 8 children the family set sail on "The St. Andrew" under the command of Capt. Brown. They arrived in America through a port in Philadelphia. And settled in York County, area and are found in Colonial York County, in the Warrington, Washington Townships. He became a naturalized citizen on October 10, 1765.
Margaretha died October 17, 1782. As written under Phillip Hamman's page, the family had come down through the Shenandoah Valley through the Cumberland Gap and coming into Whitley Station, Ky., Margaretha insisted on stopping to clean up and look presentable when they came to Whitley's Tavern.
There was a well known as Hapel Patch on the Wilderness Road and while cleaning up they were ambushed by Indians. This massacre was known as Baughman's Defeat. Margaretha was killed as well as her son Henry and other close relatives, including her great grandchild, the infant child of Phillip and Christina Cook Hamman. The Indians took everything, even the clothes they wore, down to thier "lindsey-woolsey", underwear. Jacob died ca 1782, in Greenbrier Co., on Greenbrier River, Va., now W. Va.
