In Tennessee? It could be a Baughman descendant, too. At least one of their sons died in Marshall, Sullivan, Tennessee (d.1814):

Jacob Baughman was born March 22, 1696, in Elgg Parish, Schottikin County, Zurich, Switzertland. He first married Susahhan Schwizigler January 21, 1721. She died and he married her sister Margaretha Schwizigler in Zurich on March 8, 1721. It was said, "without celebration or fanfare, as they were still in mourning from the death of Susahhan". Margaretha was born December 25, 1698, at Schottikan, Switzerland.

In the year of 1744, and with 8 children the family set sail on "The St. Andrew" under the command of Capt. Brown. They arrived in America through a port in Philadelphia. And settled in York County, area and are found in Colonial York County, in the Warrington, Washington Townships. He became a naturalized citizen on October 10, 1765.

Margaretha died October 17, 1782. As written under Phillip Hamman's page, the family had come down through the Shenandoah Valley through the Cumberland Gap and coming into Whitley Station, Ky., Margaretha insisted on stopping to clean up and look presentable when they came to Whitley's Tavern.
There was a well known as Hapel Patch on the Wilderness Road and while cleaning up they were ambushed by Indians. This massacre was known as Baughman's Defeat. Margaretha was killed as well as her son Henry and other close relatives, including her great grandchild, the infant child of Phillip and Christina Cook Hamman. The Indians took everything, even the clothes they wore, down to thier "lindsey-woolsey", underwear. Jacob died ca 1782, in Greenbrier Co., on Greenbrier River, Va., now W. Va.
^^I think the massacre site is about 10 miles north of the border with Tennessee. Margaretha was one of my 6th great grandmothers.

My most recent Stutts ancestor is Susan "Susannah" Stutts, born 1806 in Carthage, Moore, North Carolina, daughter of Leonard Stutts and Mary Williamson. She married Walter Danley (also given as Donnelly) and they ended up in Wayne County, Tennessee. Their children and grandchildren ended up in Lauderdale County, Alabama.
I have an Ancestry match who descends from Henry Stutts II, born 1809 in Moore County, NC, and died 1885 Lauderdale County, Alabama.

Re Bowman, I'm interested in a Jesse Bowman who allegedly lived in Chicago (well, near, at the time) around 1850. One version of the story is:

"Established in 1850, Bowmanville was one of many communities annexed by Chicago in 1889.

A local inn keeper, Jesse Bowman, sold tracts here in the 1850s, then skipped town after buyers learned the land was not his to sell. His name lives on as the namesake of one of the neighborhood's main drags."

    and

"Developer Jesse Bowman helped establish the village of Bowmanville in the late 1800s. Trouble was, he didn't own the land he was selling. He skipped town, but his name stayed — on the neighborhood nestled south of Rosehill Cemetery."

Note even these (both from the Chicago Trib) don't have consistent dates, although the 1850 one is the one I most commonly see. I've seen references in local papers as early as 1857, although not earlier, so if the story has any truth to it, the mid century one seems to be more correct than the late 1800s one.

I've not found Jesse Bowman, however, and none of the stories I've seen have actual cites. I definitely could do better research than I've done so far, but I'm casually interested in US Bowmans of the relevant era and location as a result.

Note: someone in Chicago in 1850 (or '57), if an adult, was most likely born back east somewhere.

My mother's family went to Arkansas by way of Tennessee, which is why I have the North American communities I have at AncestryDNA.

Not too long ago I was in Sevier County, Tennessee, myself, visiting. Bought a rifle there.

It's a beautiful, green, mountainous area. Our plan right now is to retire in that area at the end of the current school year, when I am due to retire.

    Whoa!

I have a boatload of Stutts matches at AncestryDNA. I am descended from Susan "Susannah" Stutts (1806-1898), my third great grandmother, the daughter of Leonard Stutts (1765-1856) and Mary Williamson. Leonard was the son of Jacob Heinrich Stutz (1732-1796), who was born in Switzerland. His father, Ulrich Stutz (1688-1775), who was born in Zürich, Switzerland, was the immigrant.

I believe your Henry Stutts is the brother of my ancestor Leonard.

Susan Stutts must have passed on a lot of autosomal DNA to me, because I have a lot of matches on my Stutts line.
