Now that information is being handled by forensic genetics firm Verogen in San Diego, which announced on Monday that it had bought GEDmatch.

Brett Williams, Verogen’s CEO, said GEDmatch’s users would continue to retain the ability to opt-out from searches by law enforcement agencies, such as those that helped identify the man suspected of being the Golden State killer. But he also indicated a vision for the site that focuses on solving crimes, not just connecting family members via their DNA.

“Never before have we as a society had the opportunity to serve as a molecular eyewitness, enabling law enforcement to solve violent crimes efficiently and with certainty,” he said in a statement. He added that the site would fight future attempts to access the data of those who have not opted in, in an apparent reference to a case last month that saw Florida police obtaining a warrant to search opted-out profiles on the site.

The amount Verogen paid for GEDmatch hasn’t been disclosed. BuzzFeed News reported that Verogen hopes to monetise the site by charging for access to the database and tools for DNA analysis.

Evon For those of us who were there since the inception of Gedmatch- I feel we deserved better than the way this was handled. A notice should have gone out. I have deleted my 15 kits but not yet my own.. or closed the account..

To be honest, I rarely use Gedmatch anymore and really only signed up for the calculators and oracles. Most of which are now outdated and not very useful anymore. I’ve never used it for genealogical purposes, so it probably doesn’t pay for me to have an account anymore. Especially, if they’re going to start charging money to use their services. They’ll have to come up with something mighty special for me to shell out any money at this point. So I’ll probably just refuse to sign their agreement and let them delete my account.

    Yet it's done!

This is the page I have:
The website GEDmatch.com has been acquired by Verogen, Inc. Since your account has been associated with a European Union member state, GDPR regulations require authorization from the kit donor before the previous owners of GEDmatch.com can release DNA data for inclusion on the GEDmatch.com site operated by Verogen. You will gain immediate access to your kit's one-to-one matches after you indicate your authorization in the form below. You will not need to upload your raw DNA file again, and you will be able to keep your same kit number. One-to-many matches will require reprocessing, which generally takes about 24 hours. It may take longer during the initial surge. After you have indicated your preference(s) below, click this button to continue on to your GEDmatch.com home page. Your kits and the associated match results will NOT be available to you, other users, or Verogen until you have indicated your approval in the green column below. Kits listed below that have not been approved by 9 December, 2020, will be permanently deleted.

I am curious about what will happen to the various calculators, as surely they are not owned by Gedmatch, so I guess they will be removed.. They are very outdated by now, but they are still very popular..

I deleted all kits except one of mine. i dont understand the implications of this collaboration between Gedmatch and Verogen so i decided to err on the side of caution. Maybe a knee jerk reaction, but Id rather be safe than sorry. I rarely used Gedmatch anyways as of late
