    G3a in Greece (Dodecanese)

    I was interested in seeing the haplogroups of my matches and wrote a very simple program to count their frequencies. Here is the top 5 myDNA haplogroups found in my matches:

    Surprisingly, G3a was my third most common haplogroup, with 25 matches having it. I also saw that 4 matches had G3 and 3 matches had G3a1. I read online that it is an East Asian haplogroup. I had a look at the matches, and from what I can see, most of them are verifiably from the Dodecanese, specifically Kalymnos.

    Any idea why G3a frequency is quite high among my matches?

    I have about a 4th-6th cousin connection with a big number of Kalymniotes. There is a lot of endogamy in my matches from that island (and my matches overall.) Cousin to one, cousin to all is pretty much the rule among my matches from that island. I am guessing small islands are very likely to show examples of genetic drift such as this. If a couple of sisters, or even one woman who had a bunch of daughters carried that haploid group, it could spread quickly among the population of the island.
