# Thread: Genetic distance question

1. ## Genetic distance question

Hello,

When I use these calculators and g25 coordinates..what is considered a close distance and what is considered far? How close do you have to be in order to be considered to have that ancestry?

How far does it have to be in order to be considered not within your ancestry at all? I know it depends on the person used for that population...

Thanks

2. As an example, among all French individuals (excluding Corsicans) from G25 scaled, distances (Vahaduo * 100) between them vary from 1.5 to 9.3.

The largest distance between European pops is up to 19-22 (like Sardinians/SouthItalians vs Latvians/Estonians/Lithuanians/Finns).

Distance between me and my brother, who has therefore exactly the same ancestry than me, is 1.7 and distance between me and my mother is 10.7.

I would personally consider distances as below but this is rather subjective :

< 5 : very close (like most of the distances between different pops from a same European country or between pops from European neighbor countries)
5 and 15 : close (like most of intra-european distances)
15 and 30 : far (like most of distances between Western Europeans and Middle Easterners/North Africans)
> 30 : very far (like the distances between Western Eurasians/North Africans and East Asians or Sub-Saharans)

4. I modelled 26 coordinates using only their parents, and the average fit was 1.46

Distance (according to me):
< 1.5 = almost identical
1.5 - 2.5 = close
2.5 - 3.75 = relatively close
> 3.75 = far
