As far as I know its West Punjab for the last couple of generations but before then I have no idea. Some have said Delhi/UP area. Is there something in my results that would make you think Haryana?

Yes I've noticed a number of Punjabi Syeds don't look like Punjabis genetically, they look like UP Syeds with some Punjabi admixture.

Historically there weren't many Syeds who settled in Punjab. The region was mostly passed over by Middle Eastern populations in route to Delhi or the Deccan. The Syeds who eventually did end up there had already been well established across India, and moved there to act as administrators for whichever sultanate was ruling the North at the time. So basically, many Syeds in Punjab aren't original Punjabis, but North Indians who have lived in Punjab for a few centuries.

I noticed this with a few of the Sheikh samples to. Most of them look more or less like Khatris, but a couple I've seen are way different, looking more like UP Sheikhs.

What you're saying makes a lot of sense. The Deccan region had quite a few Syeds as there was a good amount of Shia/Sufi influence in that region and of course Delhi and UP had many as well. Now my dads side is probably not Syed due to the haplogroup being R-Y6. I was speaking to MDL a few days ago and he brought up the idea of an ancestor being Brahmin and taking on the Syed title upon conversion. I think thats a fair possibility and a lot of my muslim matches on GED are UP/Bihar Muslims. To me it is either that or maybe we did actually come from Gilan in Iran to somewhere either in Delhi/UP area or the Deccan, assumed the Syed title and migrated to Punjab.

    What do you think?

I mean just looking at your cousin posted above, he has MENA ancestry. The SW/Med scores make it pretty likely. But he has a very low Caucasus for a Punjabi, a borderline low Baloch for a Punjabi, and a borderline high South Indian for a non-Chamar/Dalit Punjabi. The NE Euro is too low for a Punjabi Brahmin convert.

So either a MENA guy came to Punjab, married a Chamar, and his descendants proceeded to marry only Chamars to present day, or your ancestors were originally UP Syeds.

Haplogroup doesn't mean much. I've seen Syed Indians with 15% MENA on 23andMe with Indian haplogroups.

So when you say haplogroup does not mean much are you saying that not only J1 can be Syed?

I am assuming his high MED comes from his mother since mine is lower and our SW Asian is similar. I can see the UP thing though 100% because that is what I was thinking as well before. MDL was saying most likely West UP as well.
