Why does my mother have more matches?

On FTDNA my mother has 5700 matches, I have 800! Why?

For one thing, she is a generation closer to her matches than up are. Still the discrepancy seems large.

Would this be caused by the Maternal side of my family having a significantly larger number of testers? On the first page of my mothers results, most matches are from one of her lines.

Yeah, if not many relatives from your father's side have tested that might contribute to your fewer matches, but the difference seems sort of large?

Were your and your mother's tests both originally done by FTDNA, or is yours a transfer from another company? In the case of transfers, only closer matches appear, no distant match appears.

My mother has a line that is an extremely common Donegal surname, so that may explain it. I'm still not sure though why the large difference and what that would mean? My father's family aren't particularly into genealogy.

Both transfers from the same company with the same SNPs tested?

Do both tests use the same version of the chip?
For instance, in my case, my results are FTDNA V1, my full brother results are 23andme V5 transferred to FTDNA: I have only 358 matches, my brother totals 1627 matches.

Yes, they are both transferred from AncestryDNA.
