According to you, does the work of Eran Elhain on Ashkenazi Jews make sense ?

Tell me what you think about it. Share your personal theories or the studies you believe in on the history and genetics of Ashkenazi Jews. If you have individual results to share, feel free to do so.
Thank you very much for your time. Greetings

If you have time, you can see here a good summary of his work. (Basically he rejects the "Rhine theory" and proposes instead a migration from Anatolia/Iran/the Caucasus to Eastern/central/western Europe). The Kazars are included in his narrative but are not the main part of it (if I understood well).

It's already been shared, there is plenty of well-written critiques in this forum, no need to create a new thread.

Short answer: Ashkenazis are virtually the same population as Sefardis, North African, Italian and other Euro-Mediterranean jewries in terms of ancestral populations and Eran Elhaik is a joke or was trying to be original (some scientists, in all fields, hold on to their views even if they're in the minority and already discredited).

Elhaik has written some of the best science-fiction in the field to date. As far as logic goes, Ashkenazim being Khazars makes about as much sense as South Italians and Aegean Greeks being Pechenegs.

Are there people out there still believe in the Khazar theory crap...well, apart from antisemites of course. Genetic studies already place western Jewish peoples(Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews) as being over 50% genetically Levantine or Canaanite affiliated which is also true for the Palestinian Muslims as well. The difference between Jewish groups(as well as Arabic speaking Levantine groups like Christians, Druze and Muslims) are based on the degree of purity and admixtures, not the overall genetic ancestry.

It's sad to see that there are plenty of people who still think things from the 19th and 20th centuries in the 21st century despite what science had largely discredited all of their claims.

Elhaik is a bullshitter. Not only does his theory not make sense, I can only presume he knows it's wrong at this point but is so married to the idea that he just can't give it up. Ashkenazi Jews are clearly a mix of Levantine and East Mediterranean components, with only minor admixture from other sources.

I think a lot of discussions at this forum underestimate the transalpine (and I guess West Med) elements of the Ashkenazi mix too. The average Eastern Ashkenazi is probably ~20% non-Mediterranean; the average Western Ashkenazi less so, by virtue of having negligible Slavic ancestry. A pure Northeast Med—Levantine model would give you overwhelming skew toward the former, which uniparental evidence clearly rejects. In the other direction, quite a bit of Ashkenazi mtDNA is probably Western/Central European.

Ashkenazi Jews do show East Asian admixture, however. At least in the G25 spreadsheet. I wonder how they obtained it.
