My third cousin has one of the highest rates of MENA ancestry (exceeding 20%) that I have ever seen in a South Asian Muslim. In addition with greater than 1% Ethiopian/Eritrean.

Her mom is only 7% WANA per 23andMe which makes me especially curious what her dad's results would show, wouldn't be surprised if he was a quarter Iranian.

The previous result is her full sister and their mtDNA is X2b4.

20% is quite a bit. Does your cousin have very recent Iranian ancestry?

Did you notice that Chinese traces often show up with Iranian, Caucasian, and Mesopotamian category? Wonder if it’s actually Turkic

I've speculated for long time, most syeds in SA recieved their ancestry via Uzbeks and central asians rather than Iranian or arabs. The east asian is coming from there

I concur with the view. I too had Chinese and trace Yakut ancestry on 23AndMe. Most models on gedmatch translated it to a Central Asian component , instead of any Chinese group . Though no Iranian, Caucasian or Mesopotamian cues for me.

I read this on Wikipedia , so not sure how much scientific weight this holds.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkic_peoples
" Recent linguistic, genetic and archaeological evidence suggests that the earliest Turkic peoples descended from agricultural communities in Northeast China who moved westwards into Mongolia in the late 3rd millennium BC, where they adopted a pastoral lifestyle"

Major migration into South Asia occur from Iran and Central Asia (Bukhara) due to Mongol conquest. However, some people migrated along with Humayun who sought refuge in Safavid Iran and later reasserted control over India. That later group including Qizilbash, lead to a specifically Shia influence in Awadh and other parts of South Asia.
Aside from Syeds, central asian Bukharan and west asian Jewish communities were also present in parts of South Asia where traces of their presence can be found all along the GT road from Peshawar to Calcutta. Baghdadi neighborhood in old Karachi is a testament to the presence of Iraqi Jewish community.

I'll have to ask her mother.

Her mother is 7.7%, I'd expect ~30%+ for her father in that case.

For my cousin's case, she would at least have an Iranian great-great-great grandparent on her mother's side and perhaps another Iranian grandparent on her dad's side, at least to make the numbers work out.

A difference I'm noticing with UP Muslims of an Ashraf background and with Hyderabad Deccan Muslims of similar backgrounds is that the Hyderabad Muslims frequently have more recent WANA ancestry. While it appears much further in the past for UP Muslims. I think the pattern that my cousin exhibits would have become pretty rare for UP Muslims by the early 1900s. My general theory is that the aftermath of the 1857 rebellion permanently ended regular Iranian migration to Uttar Pradesh.

In addition another match whose a quarter Hyderabad: https://anthrogenica.com/showthread....l=1#post789514
