GEDmatch - Weird results, but do they mean something?

I got 50% English, 35% Irish and 15% Scottish in the latest update. It was similar to the 2019 update, except on that I got some Norwegian: 55% English, 43% Irish and Scottish, 2% Norwegian.

If I did have an ancestor from Russia or Finland, wouldn’t it show on at least one of these results though? This is why I’m confused.

Have you uploaded the Ancestry data to Gedmatch, and if so do you get the same or similar results?

i have read/been told that converting the 23/me V5 to the V3 is crapola because of imputations. the percentage of imputations I do not know but they go on about how its pretty much garbage, my words not his.

Agree with the above^^^

My guess is that it is a quirk (the high Siberian) of the v5 chip data on GEDmatch. I know there is a way to convert your v5 data to the more reliable v3 data, admixture studio has the app for doing that I believe.

It looks like the Siberian isn’t out of thin air as it popped up on my AncestryDNA upload as well, just in smaller amounts/in different categories.

But question is, is it worth investigating still?

Davidski identified a Sami component in me, which is apparently common in Irish people and would have come in around the Viking era. My mother scores 1.5% Amerindian on DNA Land; she is practically full-blooded Irish.

At least one of the recent Viking findings was a Sami who had adopted Viking culture, so it's not as unusual as it may sound.

That’s super cool! Most of my family is from different areas of GB and Ireland, but my grandad was from Westport County Mayo and had roots in Newport as well.

The other thing I can think of is the it could be related to Essex, as a lot of my family came from there and a lot of them sailed internationally. My great grandad travelled back and forth to Australia and France and there were others in the family who had the same trade. I wonder if it’s possible that the ‘Norway’ AncestryDNA came up with was real or if it was from Vikings a long time ago.

Another thing I could think of was a 3rd great grandad who was in the military and travelled internationally to places including Gibraltar and Cork in Ireland (his wife came with him). I’ve not found any evidence of him being in Russia; to my knowledge he was in Gibraltar during the Crimean War.

Yeah, I see that. You still get a solid amount, yes, I say keep exploring it. I for one am interested in what you can discover.
