Iranian/Caucasian/Mesopotamian in Syrian Muslim 23andme results

Has anyone figured out why Syrians get ICM in their percentages? Is it because of a recent admixture event in the last 500 years, is the admixture more ancient, or is it just being misrepresented? If itís a recent admixture event, can you point out who the migrants were, when the admixture event took place, and where the migrants came from? If itís leftover from an ancient admixture event can you also specify the who, where and when?

If you can cite sources that would be great.

I'd have to see how Syrians generally score on 23andme, but given that the country is in the Northern Levant, it's really not surprising to see those ancestry types show up. I'd imagine this happens a lot for the Druze, too. Whether those scores represent ancient shared ancestry with modern groups in those regions or in fact direct recent ancestry from the same is hard to say. What part of Syria are you from? I'd recommend getting your G25 coordinates from David at Eurogenes for a more in-depth look than what 23andme can offer. Syrians vary a lot. There are 19 Syrians currently in the G25. I even gave ancestral tendencies among them different letter names (SyrianA, SyrianB, etc.) in my G25 spreadsheet because of how diverse they are:

    Ελευθερία ή θάνατος.

I’ve noticed this too with the ones posted on Reddit and not just Syrian Muslims but the Lebanese aswell. It looks like Ottoman period Kurdish and Turkish admixture considering so many seem to be getting regions in Eastern Turkey and that the fact the Christians of the same area lack it.

I’m from Damascus. I’ve noticed Syrians from all regions getting ICM, even those on the coast. Lebanese Muslims also seem to get a lot of ICM. Considering the two areas are close, I shouldn’t be surprised, it’s just that I would like to know the details of the admixture event because it couldn’t have been in the last ~200 years because we have records.

It’s most likely Kurds but I’ve read on this topic so much and I haven’t seen details of a massive migration from Eastern Anatolia, and specifically Malatya, the ICM region most Syrians get. That’s why I was asking if anyone has documented historical evidence of such an event happening.

Another possibility I saw someone suggest was that a Levantine-like population migrated there or was already native there and was just absorbed into the Malatya/ICM reference population, and therefore the algorithm is confusing the direction of the admixture.

To be honest, I’m a little hesitant about uploading to GEDmatch due to privacy concerns. Is there a way I can use GEDmatch to learn more about genetics and ancestry without uploading my results?
