    Structure of R1a-M417

I did a survey of the FTDNA tree of R1a and put what I found in the attached PDF. It's probably pretty basic knowledge if you're in R1a but I figured it might be useful.

Most of my family is from Tennessee, though a few of my ancestors are from adjacent areas of North Carolina and Georgia. My paternal line is positive for Z30682, underneath J-Z7671 and Y11200.

The regional and national representation of R1a-Z93 clades in FTDNA in not really representative for the real frequency and absolute number of R1a-Z93 clades. For example R1a-Z93 makes around of 0,5-2% of European Y-DNA (excluding Tatars and Caucasians) but you will find much more samples from Europe under many Z93 clades than from Afghanistan, India, Gedrosia or Central Asia, where the frequency and absolute number of R1a-Z93 is much much higher and definetly highest. The same is true for Arab R1a-Z93 which in terms of frequency is around 1-10%. 1% in Egypt and Jordan for example and around 5-10% in the Gulf states. At least Half of these Z93 is Z2124 and the rest mostly L657 with some Z93- (Some bedouin tribes have a founder effect of Z282*). So L657+Y40 (FT197453) has a frequency of around 0,5%-5% among Arabs with most communities/tribes rather around 2% or lower. Much of these Z93 arrived also fairly recently in the region from contacts with Gedrosia/South Asia and Central Asia/Iran. L657+Y40 on the otherside makes around 10% of Tajik/Pashtun/Afghan Uzbek and 20-40% of Baluch/Brahui/Makrani/Indian Y-DNA but is by many just described as Indian-Arab subclade of R1a what is very inaccurate. Rather L657 looks like a clade centred in India, Khorasan (historical province), Afghanistan and Gedrosia. Y40 has a broader spread than L657 and is more present in South Europe and Anatolia but in terms of frequency and absolute number highest in Afghanistan and South Asia too (peaking in relative frequency among Burusho and absolute number in India)
