I know people, who are 1/16 Ashkenazi, most of their matches are Jewish and they did not get any genetic group, which is related to this ancestry. Here in this thread are also people who got Ashkenazi groups, without any distant or recent this kind of ancestry. I am sure it does not work this way

My great aunt is one of them. She gets the Poland, Ukraine, Russia and Romania group at medium confidence despite having no known Jewish ancestry. The only test that gave her a Jewish percentage was Ancestry in 2018 with <1% European Jewish.

For AncestryDNA kit, my genetic groups are Southern and Northeastern USA, United States, and Tennessee at medium confidence under Nigerian. I also have Alabama(medium) and the Netherlands/South Holland (low) as additional genetic groups. Funny how they detected the latter communities, yet no English and vaguely North/West European from where these genetic groups fall under in my ethnicity results. It goes to show that the ethnicity results have flaws and that the genetic groups are kind of there to fill in the blanks. The update basically reaffirms my heritage is chiefly African American, along with some colonial European ancestry.

My mother has a big overlap with US midwest.

Especially with two groups:

*Northeast and Midwestern United States (even high score)
*England, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands (medium score)

So, has anyone figured out how they came up with genetic groups? Do they just use their user base's current location and they just give you whichever has the most DNA matches with you?

AFAIK The genetic groups are based on specific DNA segments shared between people in combination with family trees in the same region.
