I'm not sure how much human involvement was involved in the creation of the groups apart from giving them a human readable name. Some of the groups are very broad, yes, maybe showing shared IDP segments of common ancient origin. Others very specific, for example there is even a group for the island of Kalymnos which has a very small population. I'm not sure of the actual usefulness of the former broad type of groups, I think only the latter actually are useful. If anyone can actually think why the massive unspecific groups are actually useful, please let me know.
    They can be useful if a cluster of matches with bad genealogical information, of which you want to decide in which branch they belong, all fall into one of these and not another candidate group. Like for me it makes a difference if someone gets Western German regions only or the broad Central-Eastern European categories. Especially if its true for whole clusters of matches with overlaps. On its own, it won't tell you that much probably, but its additional information for your consideration to differentiate between different genealogical lineages.
    Its one of these features of which we all know they aren't perfect and you can't just rely on them, but its better having them than not having them in many instances nevertheless. For example, the same kind of clustering would be of great help for me on AncestryDNA, 23andme and FTDNA. Especially with the people which have no real tree and background information provided, but constitute important matches because of their size and segments.

There must have been some sort of large amount of IBD sharing between members of the trained group who shared some sort of connection in some sort of geographical area.

    But if you're talking about scoring groups, they aren't anywhere near close to infallible. That's only case for the groups that are called High Confidence, and they are very hard to score.

    Medium Confidence groups have a decent chance of being wrong.

    Low Confidence groups are wrong a lot of the time.

    I like the update, it's better than having nothing. But false positives are a big problem, as they can lead to trying to find ancestral connections that don't exist.

    Should I try to find my mother's ancestral connection to Trondheim, Norway? I know there's absolutely no connection to that area and it's hilarious to me that it appears at Medium confidence. But for others, they might think it's real and try to track down this ancestry that doesn't exist.

    I've said this a few times before, but false positives are a bigger problem than false negatives on DNA websites because the information is really only useful for genealogical purposes. And if a lot of the information is wrong, then it loses a lot of its purpose. Not scoring a group when one should is also an issue, but usually one can work out common connections with good research into their matches family trees. Groups should be a way to automate this process with high accuracy, not completely remove the need for one to research for themselves.
    Spot on. MH has a problem with IBS/false matches and I really noticed it with my mother who for some reason gets a lot of 20cM-40cM connections with Euros who have no sign of southern ancestry. I suspect it only gets worse the more north you go.

    23andMe mostly has the typical small segment false matches but I don't think I've found a decently-sized match with someone that doesn't make any sense at all. They're quite good.

    I've checked in detail and noticed the issue.

    One of her matches is half Rhodian and half Norwegian (from Trondheim). All the shared matches between them (all of them Rhodians) had the 'Norway (Trondheim)' group at Medium Confidence.

    So that leads me to the conclusion that he must be a member of the reference panel for the Trondheim group.

    So a single Greek migrant in Norway is solely capable of causing false positives to a bunch of people.

    More filtering clearly needs to be done for their reference users used to build the groups.

    So I have been going through my closely related cousins (most who I personally know in the family) and these are some of the regions I have come across.

    * Somalia
    * Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania
    * Eastern Africa (Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi)
    * Sudan
    * Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia.
    * Bahrain and Eastern Saudi Arabia
    * Iraq #1.
    * China (Guangdong), Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeastern Asia,
    * Portugal (Faro).
    * Netherlands (Limburg and North Brabant), Belgium (Limburg) and Germany (Cologne and Düsseldorf).
    * French settlers in Reunion
    * Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey and Greece

    How accurate is this feature in my heritage?

    Edit: We usually score minor east Asian on tests, but the European ones are really surprising.

    Their Somali genetic group is quite accurate.It gave my dad & I the Ethio Somali genetic group while my mother gets the plain old Somalia group.I've seen regular Somalis get weird noise results on myheritage like West African or Baltic/Finnish.I wouldn't take the Euro results seriously

    I was more impressed at first, but I actually get quite different results with every type of raw data, every kit I use and they even miss all my main ancestral groups or at least one every time. At the same time they add one which is not really there, but can be explained by immigrants from my main groups which contributed to these colonials.

    I am not impressed with their regions. They have given me a long list of regions starting from Central Europe (Czech Republic, Austria) to Russia. Basically, they just see that I am Eastern European and can't say anything precisely.

    An update to their ethnicity estimates is indeed long overdue. Even if they don't add new reference populations, they could at least work on their algorithm. Their current estimates are just plain bad for my family.

    It would be nice if a Facebook user asked them via direct message, and shared the reply with us. I would do it myself, but I don't have an account.
