Thread: Do I have some moor dna in me?

Do I have some moor dna in me?

Quick Background: I'm an African American, born in sweet home Alabama.

So I've recently taken the 23andme test, for starters I had the common African American admixture. You know, some west African, some Northwestern European and Southern European. But what really caught my attention was the North African component of DNA. Now of course because 23andme sucks(sorry, not sorry. Alright, maybe I'm a little sorry) they didn't precisely identify. So, I downloaded the admixture studio. Downloaded my raw file, then uploaded it into euro genes k13. And here is what I got. . You see the Muslim Iberian right?!?!?! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

A distance of over 60 in something like K13 is quite irrelevant, unfortunately K13 is far from ideal for people with your ethnic background - in fact most tests and calculators are very West Eurasian centric.
How much North African does 23andme actually assign you, and does it stick at 90% confidence? It could be from Iberian ancestry, or simply mis-assigned European+Sub-Saharan African being read as North African

It's always fun to speculate, but it is pretty unlikely any Afram has significant Moorish ancestry (even from haratin) because their ancestors weren't (as far as I can tell) sourced from areas where Hassaniya Arabs lived. Some Aframs with Fulani ancestry might have North African ancestry, but I have my doubts that this ancestry in Fula is medieval (Moorish) in origin.

My advice: get your G25 coordinates from Eurogenes (it's cheap-- like $12 last I checked). It's the gold standard here. There are a ton of populations in that spreadsheet you can actually model yourself with and we can help you do that here. Those old calculators were okay for the time, but they're outdated now.

I expect you will find that most of your West Eurasian ancestry will be consistent with being British and most of your West African ancestry will best be modelled by Guinean groups.

Honestly, I'm pretty new to this whole dna game so this confidence stuff is new to me, but as far as I'm concerned it makes perfect sense because my paternal haplogroups is
E-Z827 and this haplogroup belonged and still belongs to the Marrakesh Berbers in Morroco.

    Try some other calculators.

Can you please post Original oracle from Eurogenes K13?

Or even better some calculators from Puntdnl on gedmatch?

It doesn't have to make sense, haplogroups and ethnicity are two separate and independent things, your haplogroups only give you an idea where your direct paternal/maternal ancestor might have lived a number of generations ago. E-Z827 has some 24000 years, so as you can imagine you're looking only at a really, really distant and small part of your total genetic ancestry. Z827 has more recent downstream branches all over the world

Aframs do not have Berber ancestry the vast majority of the time. Yes there are exceptions like Ayouba Suleiman Diallo, but its extremely rare. The Eurogenes oracle has distances of 60 - you need a distance of 1-5 at the least lol. Run the oracles with modern populations and see what happens.

edit: that's not to discount it entirely - to truly know you can get you can get your 25 coordinates like has already been suggested to you, that's your best bet at discerning any possible 'Moorish' dna.

Maybe it could be Spanish/Portuguese or Jewish ancestry. My Jamaican friend mostly got British Isles as his non-African part on 23andme with a typical R1b haplogroup to match but mostly got Spanish/Sephardi Jew on G25.Although to be fair 23andme gave him noise level Jewish and Iberian as well. As other members said, you will have to get your G25 coordinates to confirm or deny it

if you could pay for a G25, we could answer.
