Ancient DNA confirm the late arrival of anatomically modern humans in southern China

Ancient DNA and multimethod dating confirm the late arrival of anatomically modern humans in southern China

    Significance
Genetic studies show the founders of all living non-African populations expanded from Africa ca. 65 to 45 ka. This “late dispersal” model has been challenged by the discovery of isolated AMHs at caves in southern China suggested as early as ca. 120 ka. We assessed the age of early AMH fossils from five caves in this region using ancient DNA analysis and a multimethod geological dating strategy. We found they were much younger than previously suggested, with some remains dating to the Holocene owing to the complex depositional history at these subtropical caves. Current evidence shows AMHs settled southern China within the timeframe set by molecular data of less than ca. 50 to 45 ka and no earlier.

The "dated" Fuyan teeth do not belong to the sample we studied. They were collected later without supervision of anyone involved in the excavation. Not the ideal way of making science... They do not discuss our C14 dates neither (>43 ka)

Unfortunately the full paper requires a PNAS subscription. You could try emailing one of the authors:

    Very interesting!

Not the first time a seemingly secure cave deposit dated by flowstone turns out to be recent (or at any rate mixed with recent deposits). The supposedly Middle Stone Age human teeth at Plovers Lake in South African turned out to be Late Iron Age.

The > 43 kyo 14C date mentioned in the tweet is on animal bone, not human remains. Note that the Fuyan Cave teeth from the earlier paper were said to be very modern seeming, close to contemporary humans, and some of them had cavities. So my guess is the current paper is right and those teeth aren't very old either.
Original Fuyan Cave paper is here : https://www.nature.com/articles/nature15696.

And are any of the supposedly pre-50 000 year old modern human remains in the east any more secure?

The paper is paywalled but there is a supplement. I don't know if these dates are calibrated, or how good the coverage is. The DNA seems to be mitochondrial, not surprisingly, and though not extremely old it would really be nice to have genome wide DNA from these regions, so hopefully more will be forthcoming one day.

Fuyan Cave (Daoxian county, southern Hunan province):
    FY-HT-1 ... 2510 ± 140 BP mt hg D5a2a1ab + 2 private mutations - shared with Han and a Mongol
    FY-HT-2 ... 9380 ± 90 BP mt hg D5a2a1h1 root - shared with Han and Tibetans

Yangjiapo Cave (Enshi Miao and Tujia Autonomous Prefecture, western Hubei province):
    HBJS-DCD-H-T-488 ... 3310 BP
    JJD-301.1/.6 ... mt hg D4b2b + 4 shared mutations + 1 private - shared with Tibetans, a Miao, and a Han
JJD-301.2/.3 ... mt hg B4a4a root - B4a4a is pretty old and widespread
    JJD-301.4/.8 ... mt hg B5b2c + 4 mutations - a modern Tibetan from Bomi shared these mutations + 1 more
    JJD301.9/.11 ... mt hg A17 + 16284G + 3 private - A17+16284 shared with Tujia, Miao, Lhoba, and Tibetan

As Megalophias just pointed out, there's a supplement to the paper, it does not appear to be behind a paywall, but I may be wrong ...

"In light of our findings, we conclude that claims for an early arrival of AMHs in southern China as seemingly documented at Huanglong, Luna, and Fuyan caves cannot be substantiated at present. Instead, we find that the earliest evidence for AMHs in the region is less than ca. 35 ka, in line with molecular estimates of ca. 50 to 45 ka"

Does this perhaps mean that very old (>50 kya) artefacts found in some Australian archaeological sites weren't likely produced by modern humans?

Australia and China are far apart. It’s likely early man preferred staying south
