Sounds like a generic Persian name. I knew an Arianejad from high school.

The use of J instead of Z is interesting in Jad. The one's I know with "Jad" were from Mashhad.

Then you must have heard of Didar Sing Bains of Yuba City, he is married to a Mexican.

"Nejad" means race in Persian. "Zade" means child of <father>. Iranian last names are made up with no meaning behind it. We didn't have last names till early 1900s. The suffixes and last names themselves were all made up randomly at the request of the individual.

I went to high school with some of the Punjabi Mexican descendants. It was strange to see people named Jose Michael Singh.

They didn't actually form a endogamous ethnicity and the ethnicity mostly seems to be a "one-time" thing as out-marriage rates are extremely high.

I grew up mostly in the Central Valley. The South Bay was ~2ish or less hours away from me by driving. My HS's South Asian were 90% Punjabi Sikh except for two Muslims (one of which was me), two Hindus, one Christian. I'm sure the Bay Area is radically different.

Later on I started drawing the connections with the early Punjabi settlers and agriculture. They were the pioneers.

What caught me off guard about the region initially was that you had rural small towns that were 10-20% Punjabi throughout.

Punjabi farmers in rural California is different than the stereotypes of Gujarati Motel owners or South Indian Engineers in Silicon Valley or the people that live in ethnic neighborhoods in Queens/Brooklyn.

I'm related to Sabrina Jalees. Her dad is Pakistani and her mom is Swiss. Which seems to be almost perfectly reflected in her results.

Ah yes, definitely a lot of Gujaratis and South Indians where I grew up. I couldn’t give you accurate statistics off the top of my head but those two groups definitely felt like the predominant South Asian ethnicities there. Quite a few Pakistanis (largely Punjabi or Muhajirs, a few Pashtuns) and Afghans too. Funny enough I know more Sindhi Indians than Pakistanis, with one even being Muslim.

We actually had Punjab vs Karachi Muhajir basketball games on my driveway in the 1990s.
