Lightbulb David W. Anthony Presentation on Steppe Genetics & Societal Organization (March 2021)

Second half is extremely interesting stuff!
Especially regarding emerging evidence of his theory of the Yamnaya being a male-centered sodality—due to their kinship dynamics.

    Thoughts??

What I always told, the CHG_NW-Iran (0:53) from the Caspian Sea and Volga side is not related to the Anatolian Farmer in the Caucasus-Black Sea side and he said they still have not identified the CHG source but they were in the Steppe much earlier in 6500BC. (1:45)
The Volga-Caucasus mating network is a North-South cline EHG-CHG ancestors of Yamnaya but Yamnaya's Y-DNA have not been found in the Volga mating network with almost 200 samples from the Steppe. They don't know where the males originated ? Around 4500-4300 some moved to Eastern Europe. Volga cline was a great-uncle of Yamnaya. Sredni Stog does not match Yamnaya Y-DNA and Yamnaya has homogeneous individuals from Hungary to Altai but even in the Volga others are genetically more distant and buried only 200 meters close to them.
They have pure EHG from Murzikha in the forest in 4300 BC, a family cemitery. Ekaterinovka in 4600 BC is picking CHG in a transition from EHG. Khvalynsk to the South 4500/4300 BC with copper and largest cemitey with more than 200 individuals and aninals sacrifice. Yamnaya graves, male sodality, male elite and status.
    J1 FGC5987 to FGC6175 (188 new SNPs)
    MDKAs before Colonial Brazil
Y-DNA - Milhazes, Barcelos, Minho, Portugal.
mtDNA - Ilha Terceira, Azores, Portugal

The Sredni Stog samples were mostly female so “it may just be bad luck”

Is there published YDNA from Sredni Stog? I know the Z93 sample is now dated to the MBA.

Not sure but Anthony referenced unpublished samples in that video.

Fact-checking and debunking - You wrote that:

EHG never migrated to Turkmenistan and CHG never moved into the steppe you (...).

Yamnaya is a mixture of EHG/Ukraine_N with mostly hunter-fisher populations from the north Caucasus foothills rich in CHG-related ancestry.

You'll see that this mixture took place well north of the Caucasus near the Don River around 4,500 BCE!

The scientists at Harvard and Max Planck have been ignoring CHG because they made a mistake.

They make mistakes, like everyone else.

Yamnaya didn't form when early farmers from Iran or Armenia migrated into the steppe, but this is the story that these scientists were hoping for.

What you'll see in the new data is that a population almost exactly like Yamnaya already lived way up north near the Don River at least a thousand years before Yamnaya.

The formation of this population is still a mystery, and I don't think the new data will resolve this problem anytime soon, but it seems to me that ultimately it was a fusion of two or three different hunter-fisher populations living in different parts of the steppe.

Really fascinating video, despite all the Sredney Stog samples being female would have to imagine its the source or culture that birthed R-M269, also pretty convinced Cernavoda Culture will be responsible for R-PF7562.

    You were wrong.

    I was right.

Not entirely relevant, but WSHs have derived rs1050152 at a rather high frequency for an ancient population (data from Mathieson et al 2015). It could indicate they or their ancestors relied on crops and/or ergothioneine-poor animal foods for a significant part of their diet. In hindsight, it also forshadowed EEF ancestry in WSHs, which would be formally confirmed by Wang et al.

Edit: EEF ancestry was also forshadowed by mtDNA.
