Tracing your ancestry to the pre-partition Punjab.

Upon request from members on this forum, I am creating this poll focused on Punjab and nearby regions. Historically, the region was named Punjab (Persian-five rivers), and governed as three Subahs by the Mughals: Lahore, Delhi and Multan. However, to makes polling easier, I am using British administrative divisions with corresponding 'regional name' as categories to choose from. Those are as follows.

1: North Punjab-Potohar: Attock, Jhelum, Rawalpindi, Shahpur

2: Lahore-Central Punjab: Amritsar, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Gurdaspur, Lahore, Lyallpur (Faisalabad), Montgomery (Sahiwal), Sheikhupura, Sialkot

3: Multan-South Punjab: Dera Ghazi Khan, Jhang, Mianwali, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur(Princely State)

4:Jalandhar-East Punjab: Ferozepore, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kangra, Ludhiana

5: Haryana-Delhi: Ambala, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hissar, Karnal, Rohtak, Shimla

6: Princely States of East Punjab & Hills: Patiala, Jind, Nabha, Sirmur, Loharu, Dujana, Pataudi, Kalsia, Simla Hill States, Kapurthala, Mandi, Malerkotla, Suket, Faridkot, Siba, Chamba, Kahlur(Bilaspur)

For more information refer to Imperial Gazetteer of India, v. 26, Atlas 1931 edition, "Punjab, p. 34.

4:Jalandhar-East Punjab: Ferozepore, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kangra, Ludhiana

My father's family is from Ludhiana and my mother's family is from a village that was formerly part of southern Hoshiarpur district but is now part of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district.

Prior to migrating to the US though, my mother's family lived in Sri Ganganagar district of Northern Rajasthan (on the Punjab borders), which is a cultural/ethnic extension of Punjab.

Note: Eastern Punjab can be divided into at least 3 regions that follow dialect (Majha, Doab and Malwa). My father from Ludhiana identifies as Malwa and my mother as from the Doab. Both are from border regions of the Doab/Malwa though. Their villages are like 1 hour drive apart.

My paternal family was based in KPK for a few generations, but I don't have any ethnic affiliations/ancestry from there.

(North Punjab-Potohar): My great grandparents on my father's paternal side were from a village outside Khushab city, so that would be the old Shahpur distrct.

(Jalandhar-East Punjab):My mum's grandparents were born in Ludhiana, but their parents had come from Kashmir and settled there. They had a house in what is now Naya Mohalla, Ludhiana

I was trying to find more information about this area and I found this site, according to which there is a road called Shahpur road 0.3km from it, amazing how that worked out haha:

Are your mother's grandparents originally from Srinagar or somewhere else in the Valley?

I am 90% sure they were from Srinagar or somewhere near there because my nano used to tell us stories about her relatives visiting their house from there, when she was younger. But I'll need to sit down with my uncle and go through the family documents etc to confirm.

I googled it, and found Naya Mohalla is near the CMC and at a little distance from it is a place called Kashmir Nagar. And there i a Kitchlu Nagar in Ludhiana as well. Looks like there was a good population of the Kashmiris in Ludhiana in the pre-partition period.
