I've never heard of Parsis being considered a higher caste, let alone being included in the caste system or ever been mentioned being a part of it. If anything Parsis would have been treated like the other non-Dharmic groups that settled in South Asia, as foreigners or outsiders.

By 'high caste' I meant they were a foreign group who were considered unmixed by Europeans and those unfamiliar with the caste system. Brahmins were probably viewed this way as well and maybe certain Muslims. Parsis also rarely intermarry other Parsi the same way Hindus marry in their own caste.

Bhicaji Bulsara and Bhagat Singh Thind tried to argue in the US Supreme Court that they were "higher caste" unmixed Indians despite the fact that none of them were Hindus.

I'm not sure how the caste system works though.

Anyways what reason do you think Parsis mixed mostly with the lower caste Patels? On 23andme none of us score "Gujarati Patidar" yet on G25 we do. So it's a bit confusing.

The Europeans didn't consider Parsis "high caste" either, but "unmixed" indeed. Bhicaji Bulsara's case was not fought based on caste lines but on an ethnic justification. In fact he argued that he was "Indian" only in nationality, and was ethnically "Parsee, belonging to the purest Aryan stock" which was "as distinct from Hindus as are the English who dwell in India", where accounts of Parsis by early European colonials were also used to support his case. No mention of caste.

In Thind's case, despite him being Sikh, caste was argued because it was a case by case basis for naturalization among Indians, whereby attorneys like Sakharam Ganesh Pandit argued that not all Indians are synonymous, with the "higher castes" being "Aryans" and belonging to the "Caucasian race".

As for why Parsis mixed with Patels, it's obvious that the Brahmins and other insular communities like Lohanas would not have mixed with foreigners/outsiders. But I don't know much about the social dynamics/history of Gujarat to firmly comment on that.

Very interesting. Thanks. I guess the Biradiri pseudo-caste system best describes how Parsis group themselves. The foreign descent Parsis (most of them) and the Athornan priestly class are seen as 'higher' the same way Ashrafs are while Parsi who have an Indian parent are generally considered 'lower' in a way and Orthodox Parsis won't even accept them as Parsi or even Zoroastrian. Local converts as well.

To outsiders in the past I guess we were a foreign group like you said.

Anyways, I just had one more thing that was confusing me. None of us score "Gujarati Patidar" on 23andme which I find strange.

The Parsis I know are quite Anglicised and highly educated.

When Iranian Zoroastrians came to Gujarat they could have assimilated High AASI Castes from Gujarat instead of Patidar who are the mid-AASI group of Gujarat. We don't have any high AASI Samples from Gujarat so I think Kurumba/Sakilli are substituting for that. I had included Gujarati along with AASI Castes which is not scored.

This is incredibly helpful. Thanks a lot.

It's unfortunate that we don't have any high AASI samples from Gujarat to get the best fits possible . So I don't really know exactly which group we mixed into although it's certainly a high AASI group as you showed. Maybe with more technology in the future we will know the exact group.

Also, I've noticed I usually get bad fits when I use Iranian_Zoroastrian for Parsis as my Iranian source. I get better fits with South Central/West Iranians like Lurs as my Iran source. I guess Parsis came from around Central West Iran (around Fars) mostly while Iranian Zoroastrians are more of an Eastern Central Iranian group of that makes sense. But again, it's hard to pinpoint the exact Iranian group/location in Iran Parsis derive their ancestry from.

Gujarati samples seem to be composed from Low AASI to High AASI. GBR 17 is Nagar brahmin-like low AASI looking at the distances there likely High AASI samples as well.

There doesn't seem to be homogeneity on both sides.
