my mother sister , Rita married a Lucca man and lived there............I recall my visit there a decade ago and the favoured language of her children was Ligurian syntax type dialect, more than Florentine/Tuscan one...ie, more Lucchese dialect

my wife and I speaking Venetian syntax needed an interpreter for the lucchese spoken at the table......my aunt stepped in as interpreter ....................the Italian dialect while we both knew it did not come out verbally, me so because it clashes with my venetian which I was brought up with.

you know the old saying...........If you want to learn Italian, ensure you are not an Italian

Funnily enough, Western Tuscan (Lucchese, Pisan, Livornese) dialect/local language does show Ligurian influences and Lucca people are called "Tirchi" (Misers) by people from other parts of Tuscany and compared to the Genoese for their parsimony.

Have you come across the surname "Ghenzi" in NE Italy?

not Ghenzi......some in western Lombardy .............in Veneto and Friuli is zero , there is Ghezzi though , that surname goes from Lombardy, Trentino and the rest of North-East Italy

it was also in tuscany in 1630ish ................province di Piacenza e Parma, in Toscana nell'aretino.
