British Isles "natives" post their commercial ethnicity estimates

The purpose of this is to see how well commercial testing companies differentiate between any British isles DNA and other European DNA. Also, to see what an average or normal result is for someone whose 4 grandparents were born there, and can expect most or all of their ancestry to be from the isles. To that end, please only post your results if you fit, or believe within reason that you fit, that description. A European immigrant or colonial era diaspora is just as unwanted in this scenario as an African or Asian immigrant, apologies if offense is taken.

Here are the results from myself and my parents. I believe that all of the sites have accurately pinpointed our ancestry to the British Isles, however, there have been issues in deciphering our regional dna.

I will order the companies by accuracy, in my opinion.

    Myself:

    AncestryDNA

    MyHeritage

    FTDNA

I think there is an issue in separating Celtic from English and some sites appear to group English in as GB, which isn't the true definition.

    LivingDNA

LivingDNA is appallingly WRONG, I am Northern Irish and 98% of my ancestors were born here as far back as I can trace. I am certain that I am not 1.8% Northern Ireland.

    Here's my 23andMe estimate -

    Screenshot 2021-07-19 12.08.35.png

The two places listed are places where I have ancestry from, although less so than many other places.

    AncestryDNA

    Screenshot 2021-07-19 12.10.22.png

A large part of my ancestry on both sides is from the North West of England. Going by my known family history, both Irish and Welsh are slightly overrepresented. I'm unsure of any Scottish ancestry but I think a large part of it is due to ancestry from Ireland and Northern England.

    LivingDNA

    Screenshot 2021-07-19 12.13.11.png

I have ancestry from most of the blue regions as well as Ireland and no known ancestry from most of the white regions except for North Yorkshire.

    MyHeritage

    Screenshot 2021-07-19 12.15.39.png

I'm not sure where the Eastern European comes from. It overestimates English and underestimates my Irish and Welsh ancestry.

    FTDNA

    Screenshot 2021-07-19 12.17.00.png

As it includes part of England, I guess the Central European is from my more southern English ancestry.

It will be interesting to see how these commercial tests lineup with the G25 spreadsheets.

I consider myself a British ‘native’. I was born in England and all 4 grandparents were from either England or Ireland: England x3, Ireland x1. All 4 grandparents have been confirmed with DNA testing, but not all great grandparents. My known family tree is all English or Irish, but only extends back 150 years. A couple of lines go back further, but the rest is difficult. I have a third great grandparent who was Irish, making me more than 1/4 Irish.

The areas of Ireland aren’t part of Britain, but the ROI has a history with Britain.

23andme V5.9: 97.3% British and Irish, 2.3% Spanish and Portuguese, 0.2% Broadly Southern European, 0.2% Unassigned
    AncestryDNA 2020: 50% England & Northwestern Europe, 35% Ireland, 15% Scotland
FTDNA MyOrigins 3: 57% Great Britain, 29% Ireland, 7% West Slavic, 5% Greece and Balkans, 3% Finland
MyHeritage: 71.1% Irish Scottish and Welsh, 19.5% Scandinavian, 8.3% Greek and South Italian, 1.1% West Asian

Southern European is interesting. According to my grandmother someone in her line was called DeFreitas. Also one family lived in Gibraltar for some years before moving back to London. Have no idea if it’s somehow related: unfortunately it’s very difficult to confirm.

I actually got some Scandinavian, Finnish and Eastern European matches on 23andme. No clue how or if we’re related.

Sometimes the calculators do somewhat mirror these results if you look hard, but they also donít tend to give me Greek and shift me over into Scandinavia rather than England and Ireland.

Most of them make me look more Irish than I actually am, I'm 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Scottish, so Ancestry is by far the most accurate, I have no idea why MyHeritage gives me 11.5% Baltic.

I suggest using the full spreadsheet of modern individuals and modern averages. Of course you can make it easier by removing groups you've no need for i.e. Asian pops et al.

Some companies seem to lump all "celtic british" DNA under Irish for whatever reason. Maybe oversmoothing?

I tried your approach by removing other Europe. Again, it can't detect Scottish, but I suppose we could pretend the English/German is Scottish.

If so, here are our results as a family:

    Target: Owen_scaled
    Distance: 1.0355% / 0.01035545
    66.4 Irish
    15.6 English
    14.8 English_Cornwall
    2.2 Kaitag
    0.8 Balochi
    0.2 Ju_hoan_North

    Target: OwenMom_scaled
    Distance: 0.9037% / 0.00903684
    85.0 Irish
    12.8 English
    1.4 Icelandic
    0.4 Mbuti
    0.2 Chopi
    0.2 Juhoan

    Target: OwenDad_scaled
    Distance: 1.5045% / 0.01504462
    64.4 Irish
    30.4 German
    3.4 Avar
    1.6 Assyrian
    0.2 Balochi

This is actually close to our AncestryDNA results.

Modern Averages does not work, the Irish is inflated.
