Cosmopolitanism at the Roman Danubian Frontier, Slavic Migrations, and the Genomic Fo

Cosmopolitanism at the Roman Danubian Frontier, Slavic Migrations, and the Genomic Formation of Modern Balkan Peoples

    Abstract
The Roman Empire expanded through the Mediterranean shores and brought human mobility and cosmopolitanism across this inland sea to an unprecedented scale. However, if this was also common at the Empire frontiers remains undetermined. The Balkans and Danube River were of strategic importance for the Romans acting as an East-West connection and as a defense line against "barbarian" tribes. We generated genome-wide data from 70 ancient individuals from present-day Serbia dated to the first millennium CE; including Viminacium, capital of Moesia Superior province. Our analyses reveal large scale-movements from Anatolia during Imperial rule, similar to the pattern observed in Rome, and cases of individual mobility from as far as East Africa. Between ca 250-500 CE, we detect gene-flow from Central/Northern Europe harboring admixtures of Iron Age steppe groups. Tenth-century CE individuals harbored North-Eastern European-related ancestry likely associated to Slavic-speakers, which contributed >20% of the ancestry of today's Balkan people.

This is a great paper, the only quibble I have is that I don't understand why the authors can claim so confidently that the Imperial East Med samples left no genetic legacy at all in the Balkans. If you look at pg 17, figure C, you can clearly see that the modern Balkan cline runs from Imperial Near Eastern-like individuals to Kuline 10th CE individuals, in fact the cline runs completely parallel and adjacent to the IA cline with no overlap at all.
    Quoted from this Forum:

I haven't gotten to that part and will have to read the paper when I get home, but that would be odd. It seemed to me like this would be the first paper by Reichlab to admit the shifts of East Med/Anatolian and Slavic ancestry into the Balkans.

    Nice paper!

All three J2b-L283 samples are from the archeological site of Timacum Minus, Roman period, and all three are under "Balkans IA Cluster".

One of them is more specifically J-Z631>Z1043! Some think this J2b-L283 subclade expanded with the Celts. I held this theory myself a while back, though, it wasn't my main one. I thought at least a good portion of it spread across Europe as a result of the Romans. We need older J-Z631 aDNA to know for certain its point of expansion, although some of its lineages could've been incorporated with Celtic expansions to the west.

Davidski/his North Europe PCA made it into the paper or at least the supplemental:

    We ran three different PCAs:
    […]
    3. One for which PCs were computed using 407 present-day North-Europeans genotyped on the HO array (Figure S9). We designed this PCA to reveal more recent drift that could separate 3rd-6th centuries CE individuals from the 10th century CE individuals. These two groups of individuals yielded a similar position in the Western-Eurasian PCA (Figure1; Figure S7) but had significantly different ancestral origins when modelling using qpWave/qpAdm (Supplementary Section 11 & Supplementary Section 12). The design of this PCA was inspired by the Eurogenes blog:

    My takes:

    1) Modern Balkans (non Greeks), in addition to Illyrian-like admixture, have some degree of Slavic, Greek, Anatolian and Roman admixture, probably in that order
    2) J2b and E-V13 are likely local chalcolithic or bronze age lineages
    3) Albanians mostly descend from a local Iron-Age population (probably pseudo-Illyrian), people have to stop claiming otherwise
    4) Slavic influence is very important in the balkans, but Germano-Gothic admixture might have been understated
    5) Probably middle eastern migrants were of different backgrounds and they were not all slaves, or even majority slaves, since some of the most "luxurious" burials had anatolian-like individuals inside
    6) Anatolia had a disproportionately big demographic effect on Southern Europe during the late republic\early imperial period, how much Greece and Magna Graecia had to do with it, it's still to ascertain (the fact that they were mostly Greek speakers is probably why the went "unnoticed")
