Nobody is going say that these "westphalians" were not "Germanic" at some point. Granted if you talking about the origins of only Anglo Saxons then I cant disagree with a Denmark-Scania location.

However I see the the origins of AS AND Germans as a whole is being fixed to Scania by Scandinavian puritans. So now I have to split the origins of Germans, and the origin of German apart.

My understanding was that in the BA the region was full of Para Germanic dialects (including NW Block). One of these dialects would go on to become German and subsume/replace all the others. This "new" language, covering a large area obviously broke down into regional variants over time, eventually becoming north sea, eastern, rhine, suebian etc. So how can we pinpoint where in the para germanic universe German came from, if the whole region most probaly saw endless internal migrations north to south, and vice versa, and population collapse and resurgence on several occasions.

As you said at some point the original Frisians were replaced by AS like peoples, but its generally accepted afaik that the original Frisians, Batavi, Cannanfrates etc spoke Germanic and worshipped Germanic cults. So that in itself reveals that a not pure CNE population were speaking Germanic before their actual replacement by more pure AS Germanics, which is confusing.

Anyway, again I emphasise that Harz to Scania likely represents the core Germanic speaking area as a whole by 500BC which is what I think Udolf was trying to say. The word "proto" was used in a confusing way. He focused on 1000BC to 500BC, however most would agree that in fact the proto stage was earlier in the bronze age. Such a concept is incompatible with Udolfs affilitation to the Old European school, which postulates undivided Indo European lasting until at least 1000BC. Hence his late dates for "proto" Germanic.

If we swap "proto" for homeland, then it makes sense of Udolfs interpretation that from this core region, after 500BC, sprang all Germanic migrations that were witnessed in antiquity. So the proto Germanic origin, and then the Germanic "homeland" by 500BC are 2 separate things. If scandinavian puritans continue to insist that Scania was BOTH of those things, then thats an extremely narrow and exclusionary definition of "Germanic", which leads to the conclusion that all "Germanics" in Holland, Westphalia, Rhineland were conquered, colonized and were "Germanic" in name only until the post roman period. (I dont know if todays rhinelanders have more or less CNE). Therefore their inclusion in Germania, and labelling as Germani cant be justified at all (unless these are true "Germani" in the literary sense, 1st century BC/ADbut the not the true "Germans" from further north, in the genetic sense. The visible differences between them in the 1st century BC were probably minimal so the label is a catch all applied to the region from the southwest to the northeast POV), at least linguistically justifiable.

Its probably a better idea to call your Germani as "Istvaeones", although why the Chattii and Cherusci were not considered so by Pliny IDK, maybe lack of info. If they were already Herminiones (i.e. Suebi) that may explain a CNE introgression into the region, but I'd say they werent suebi as Tacitus did not include them in his description of Suebi (but he did include Angili and Eudoses as suebi, perhaps implying that the Suebi were CNE rich northerns, heirs of the Jastorf culture and proven by early bavarians/ alemanni?. So it seems the CNE rich "true" Germans split into North Sea, Suebian, and East Germans. The Isvaeonnes seem to be a different ball game entirely and may represent a pre german substrat population, which represent the true Franks)

Sorry for the ramble. I am discovering probably what you all already knew anyway.
I'm going to summarise my current hypothesis as best as possible. This will clear up a lot of confusion.

The 'true' Germanics were the tribes that during the Early Middle Ages migrated into Western Europe from the Jastorf area. Jastorf was an Iron Age culture that developed out of the Nordic Bronze Age (Proto-Germanic) with a cultural influence from the La TŤne culture to some extent. It formed a continuum (both cultural and genetic) between coastal Lower-Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Jutland-SkŚne. These 'true' Germanics were essentially 'pure' continental Northern European in ancestry and ancestral to the Anglo-Saxons and the Danish & Norwegian Vikings who settled in Britain.

The 'true' Celts were the tribes that merged out of the La TŤne and Hallstatt cultures in Central Europe. They were Iron Age cultures who expanded massively throughout Europe. The Celts migrated and settled in Western Europe before the Germanic tribes came along. We know these Celts in Western Europe as Gauls today and there are strong indications that they settled in Britain during the Roman period, possibly coinciding with a Germani settlement. The Gauls or Continental Celts in Western Europe were basically 'pure' French Iron Age in ancestry.

The faux 'Celts' were the tribes who we know currently as the Insular 'Celts' from Britain and Ireland but also Britanny, France. They are unique in the sense that they are of a pre-Celtic and pre-Germanic origin. Those tribes migrated and settled in Britain and Ireland as the Bell Beaker folk. The Bell Beakers migrated into the British Isles from The Netherlands (British Beakers descend from Dutch Beakers) and have their origins in Western Europe as a Western offshoot of the Corded Ware culture. They largely displaced the Megalithic people in Britain and Ireland. Nowadays, they survive in what is known as the 'Celtic' Fringe and are chiefly of 'pure' British Iron Age in ancestry.

Lastly, the most obscure and 'problematic group of them all, the Germani. They lived between the 'true' Germanics of Jastorf and the 'true' Celts in Western Europe, eastwards of the Rhine while the Celts lived westwards of the Rhine. The word 'Germani' has a Latin origin and it were ultimately the Romans who decided to name all the tribes north of the Rhine collectively.

Since their origins are less clear-cut than that of the 'true' Germanics, Celts and Bell Beakers.. I only have two possible explanations for them; either they descend from a mixture that occurred between earlier Germanic migrations during the time frame between the Nordic Bronze Age and Iron Age Jastorf (750 BC to 1 AD). There is a vast expansion of the Germanic tribes southwards into former Celtic territory and they mixed with the Celtic tribes who were already living there. That would also perfectly explain their position on PCA charts. Between the 'true' Germanics from Jastorf and the 'true' Celts from La TŤne and Hallstatt. They would've formed a Celto-Germanic mixture present in Western Europe and some of those Germani would've also been present in Roman Britain as mercenaries like the Celtic Gauls. Another possible explanation is that those Germani descend from a pre-Celtic and Pre-Germanic population like the Bell Beakers in the British Isles for example. I consider this possibility less likely since it doesn't coincide with PCA and G25 ancient admixture data. They aren't as Steppe as the Bell Beaker but have slightly higher levels of EEF ancestry (South Dutch, Belgians, West, Central and South Germans) which make it ultimately more sense for them to be a mixture between Germanics and Celts. There would be a genetic cline present as the Central Dutch and non-coastal Northwest Germans from Lower-Saxony seem to be more on the Germanic than Celtic side (more Steppe & WHG and less EEF) . Although a strong French IA component is still present in both populations.

I would insist on calling those 'Germani' broadly Celto-Germanic to avoid as much confusion as possible when dealing with these confusing topics. Many parts of current-day Northwestern Europe are a mixture of Celts and Germanics, some more recent than others (England being a more recent Celto-Germanic mixture while Western Germany an older one). As many Northwestern Europeans identify as such, it shouldn't be a problem generally..

Just one word in response to Straboo ( which you will possibly consider as a precision brought from the point of view of the "rigorist Puritan Scandinavists"). If we follow the work of Eva Nyman (among others) the primary area of extension of proto-Germanic in Scandinavia (already no longer its cradle, let's say its playpen) extended well beyond Scania. See for example the map of the hydronyms in -und at https://anthrogenica.com/showthread....l=1#post858333 .

I have a clear explanation. The Caesarian cut right of the Rhine Germani and left of the Rhine Celts was "purified"coffee W‚ldpik! Artificial.

    Tacitus in Germania:

The name Germany [Germania], on the other hand, they say, is modern and newly introduced, from the fact that the tribes which first crossed the Rhine and drove out the Gauls, and are now called Tungrians, were then called Germans [Germani]. Thus what was the name of a tribe, and not of a race [nationis nomen, non gentis], gradually prevailed, till all called themselves by this self-invented name of Germans [Germani], which the conquerors had first employed to inspire terror.
So at first it was an abstraction. It meant nothing. It was forced up on. In the foederati context you may be find it as a -supposed- self description, but that is always related to the Roman context, so in some sense assimilated folk. After the Roman period the word Germani became in disuse, until the sixteenth century.

Looking back now, we should not ascribe any greater significance to it. The idea that in the Roman period a completely different people lived on one side of the Rhine than on the other side is BS. But it is still seen as a kind of basic assumption .... too bad In a genetic sense - as the limited old Iron Age Dutch samples show - the Netherlands was a link in NW Europe. So shades in a palette and no hard marking lines.

Because this is where the Saxon story comes in. The genetic difference between the extreme north - very CNE - and the extreme south of the Netherlands, is mainly caused by the following. Folks from the (Danish) "bottleneck" aka Saxons, Jutes, Angles, Danish Vikings etc the North Sea amalgam came to the Northern Netherlands in the (early) Middle Ages and have profoundly influenced the gene pool (t)here. The old Germani aka Salian Franks have moved-partly to the Southwest! I even suspect that extremely crude 'markers' such as the differences in phenotype within the Netherlands can be traced back to this.

I fully support your idea of a better nomenclature in this field. As a newcomer to archaeogenetics it's been very confusing to me when we label an aDNA sample as "Germanic" when it has 83% La Tťne admixture. I assume this developed long before we had the science of aDNA. We have a linguistic definition, an archaeological definition, a cultural definition, and now a genetic definition. Maybe this is not confusing if you've been following this from the start, but a new nomenclature will make this field much more accessible.
As Angles pointed out the term "pure" also comes from earlier ideas, I suggest we use something like distinct or similar.

That's the point. When you leave the idea that there is a deep genetic crater between "Celts" and "Germanics" there is no problem.

And when you see why you have that idea, because Caesar introduced that frame, that was artificial. Became in disuse. And much much later it became loaded with presumptions that didn't correspond with reality!

So based on the 83% La Tene you could also draw the conclusion that in genetic sense there was a may be gradual but not fundamental difference on the Celto-Germanic line

Wether it be Celts or Germanics. Like Finn mentioned, the Romans found it important enough to mention the "Germani" as a subset of the Celts. Generally considered to be more barbaric and Germania was viewed as a "pure" nation with no outside influences according to Tacitus.

I don't think everyone here would agree that the label "Germanic" is appropriate for the people's east of the Rhine. But from there on it's going to become some new feud of semantics. Those people speak a Germanic language and are broadly to be considered culturally Germanic. Genetics aren't getting simplified by cultural and ethnolinguistic labels.
the term 'germani' was used before tacitus already by caesar (BG)
here ariovist is styled 'rex germanorum' and his army 'germani' on the other hand the army that marched up on the other rhine side for ariovist was called 'si nova manus sueborum' also ariovist' wife was 'una sueba natione' so there are a atleast two ethnonyms used in this area with 'germani' most prob an exonym and 'suebus' most prob an endonym; not sure if the explanation is still used but i once read that 'germani' is actually celtic/gaulish in og and means spearmen as people from the other rhine side where used as mercs ie spearmen/warbands by the gauls eg ariovist

judging by the charts in #823 there is alot speaking for it that the people of the the migration period under the umbrella term 'germani' did indeed share a common origin and alot speaks starting linguistics that before the migration period the zone in central europe shares a common origin with scandinavia (BA/IA) though whether everyone in the migration period was still upto onehundred percent of that common origin is to be seen
