    I’m getting 2 out of 11 from Norfolk were U152. If valid:
    SED005 is U152>L2>BY3483>FT166860
    SED011 is U152>L2>Z49>Z142>Z51>L562>Z57>CTS6554>FGC69666>FGC 69675

    Need to see the grave context of these 2 samples if they are indeed U152.

    So of the 23 samples from East Anglia (Norfolk & Suffolk) 2 are tentatively U152. Or 8.7%

    For comparison, modern U152 based on 2016 FTDNA data
    Norfolk 12 of 73 (16.4%)
    Suffolk 10 of 101 (9.9%)
    Essex 8 of 60 (13.3%)
    Total East Anglia 30 of 234 samples (12.8%)

    Kent U152 was 4 of 66 (6.1%) or roughly the same as Northern Germany in Myres (4 of 64)
    Webb said 5 of Buckland Kent are U152 so that 5 out of 55 or 5 out of 52 (if you don't count generic R1b) so 9-9.6% U152.

    Thats interesting. My maternal Grandfather surname is Gierat. He was born in the village of Jordanow in southern Poland. Some years ago an academic interviewed my family and informed us it was a German name with medieval roots from Czechia-Silesia area I think. She then banged on about the names association with Jews for some reason. She also mentioned the spearmen theory. I was young at the time and did not think anything of it. Then there is family lore about Gierats coming from France around Napoleon times. Dont know if any of it is true

    It's an interesting subclade: It's NOT one of the S4268>Z17112 subclades like most of the DF19>DF88s (including me, 6DT23, and VK333 or the new Klosterneuburg possible Batavi guy).

    Most probably yes, not fundamental differences but it's differentiated. Like R1b U106 DF96, among Saxons/CNE not among the Franks. And R1b S116 vice versa prominent along the Franks not along the Saxons. The most western (Westergo Friesland) part in this picture shows this (most depopulated in the third century).

    About the cemetery in Kent - which has Frankish associations as well:

    Reports excavations carried out by Sonia Hawkes in 1976, and Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit (KARU) in 1989. These revealed nineteen certain or probable penannular ring-ditches, each containing at least one grave, with a total of seventy-eight burials excavated. Suggests that the site can be divided into two phases; one belonging to the first half of the seventh century, and the other to the middle to second half of the seventh century. Combines information derived from grave assemblages with their orientation to suggest that certain burials can be attributed to one or the other of these phases. Notes that the later burials are characterised by a wider range of artefact types. Grave goods include Frankish and Byzantine imports. Preservation was generally poor, due to the soil conditions; however the age and/ or sex of sixty-two individuals was estimated. The cemetery is not completely excavated, and its date-range is unknown. Each grave, with its associated burial and grave goods is described.

    The majority of the graves are of men and children, mostly in coffins and with grave goods. The male graves yielded a Frankish pottery vessel, shield boss, spears and buckles. The children's, mostly girls, contained a disc-brooch, thread box, buckle, silver pin, gold bracteate, gilt coin and beads of amethyst and glass. All graves date from the second half of the 7th century and could be associated with the royal villa at Eastry.

I consider this possibility less likely since it doesn't coincide with PCA and G25 ancient admixture data. They aren't as Steppe as the Bell Beaker but have slightly higher levels of EEF ancestry (South Dutch, Belgians, West, Central and South Germans) which make it ultimately more sense for them to be a mixture between Germanics and Celts. There would be a genetic cline present as the Central Dutch and non-coastal Northwest Germans from Lower-Saxony seem to be more on the Germanic than Celtic side (more Steppe & WHG and less EEF) . Although a strong French IA component is still present in both populations.

    I would insist on calling those 'Germani' broadly Celto-Germanic to avoid as much confusion as possible when dealing with these confusing topics. Many parts of current-day Northwestern Europe are a mixture of Celts and Germanics, some more recent than others (England being a more recent Celto-Germanic mixture while Western Germany an older one). As many Northwestern Europeans identify as such, it shouldn't be a problem generally..
    Regarding the "Germani" or people near the Rhine on the eastern bank, this is of interest to me personally since I am U152 which is often associated with the Celts but there's almost zero samples so far of individuals from the west of the Rhine with my particular subclade. I am not too familiar with genetic studies on ancient samples east of the Rhine, but from what I've read despite the name "Germani" applied by the Romans doesn't it seem that people from the east bank of the Rhine were also Celts, or at least were so until the late Roman period when they would eventually become Franks, Alemmani, etc.?

    For example we know of the Glauberg and Heidetrank Oppidum as far inland as Hesse and most agree these are Celtic sites. Or take some of the known and named tribes east of the Rhine, such as the Usipetes east of the area around Cologne:

    While the Usipetes and their neighbours were referred to by the Romans as Germanic rather than Gauls, their name is normally explained as Celtic, as is also the case for many of their neighbours.

    Following Rudolf Much, Usipetes has been traditionally interpreted as a Gaulish name meaning 'good riders'. The root -ipetes (*epetes) was proposed to be a Celtic cognate of the Latin equites, and proponents of the theory pointed out to the fact that Caesar and others reported them to have strong cavalry.[3] However, this etymology has been rejected as linguistically untenable in more recent scholarship.[4]

    Stefan Zimmer has proposed in 2006 to reconstruct the name as the Gaulish *Uχsi-pit-s (plural *Uχsi-pit-es), formed with the Indo-European stem *upsi- ('on-high' or 'above'; cf. Gaul. *ouχsi > uχe 'high')[5] attached to *k̑u̯ei̯t- ('to appear'; with the P-Celtic sound shift kʷ- > p-). He thus suggests to translate Usipetes (*Uχsipites) as 'shining in the heights', or 'radiant', which he explains as a typical boastful tribal name.[4]
    Further south we have the tribe the Nemetes, claimed by Tacitus as Germanic yet the name appears to be of Celtic origin, related to the "nemeton" or sacred grove which is found as far afield as Galatia with their Drunemeton. A bit to the north we have the Mattiaci which wikipedia notes:

    The Mattiaci were settled on border of the Roman Empire on the right side of the Rhine in the area of present-day Wiesbaden (Aquae Mattiacorum), the southern Taunus, and the Wetterau. Archaeological evidence of Wiesbaden cannot prove their alleged origin. While the worship of various Gaulic deities like Sirona or Epona is attested, there is so far no evidence for Germanic gods nor for specific products of Germanic origin.[2]
    I am not sure how far north this situation extends, but while south of the Rhine even Nijmegen is supposed to have a Celtic etymology. In any case when material culture (La Tene culture), toponyms/ethnonyms, and deities all agree in being Celtic wouldn't those facts seem to outweigh the use of the term "Germani"? So perhaps the old notion that Caesar and other Romans used the term Germani at least initially as a political designation with the Rhine reflecting the frontier rather than an ethno-linguistic one is at least partially correct, sort of how the Caledonians/Picts north of Hadrian's Wall were also Brittonic like the Romano-British to the south?
