Interesting question. I used to think there would have been a lot of I1 in that area in 400 BC. But after the aDNA discoveries of the last couple of years I now suspect it would have been at a lower level, perhaps one in eight to ten men if I had to guess. All the evidence from further south that we have so far seems to suggest that I1 was largely confined to Scandinavia at that time.

There were 11 samples from the Netherlands in Patterson: one from the late IA, one from the Roman IA and the rest BA. None was I-M253+. There were also no I1 samples in the Tollense Valley battle study. These are small sample sizes in the scale of things but they're all we have to go on at this point...

Keep in mind that none of the Tollense samples are locals to the area and shouldn't be seen as a reflection of the region.

I have serious issues with calling the Nordic Bronze Age (which is an ill-fitting name as it was also the bronze age network of northern continental Europe) a civilization, it meets none of the hallmarks of what we typically consider a civilization.

Does anyone know if there are any upcoming papers on Middle-Late Bronze Age Germany? It would be great to have more samples from there during that period.

What I am aware of are the activities mentioned for this region on the Mitteldeutscher Archäologentag in October 2022. I wish I would have at least abstracts of the presentations.

I haven't worked out a proportion by site, Finn, apart from Drantum and Haeven, but if I counted correctly we had 55 I1 samples in Gretzinger. There were 460 male and female genomes in that study, and the I1 samples came mainly from England (n = 39) with 15 from Germany (three from Drantum, Lower Saxony (out of a total five samples from there), one from Dunum, Lower Saxony, one from Hannover-Anderten, Lower Saxony, one from Issendorf, Lower Saxony, one from Liebenau, Lower Saxony, three from Haeven, Lower Saxony (out of a total eight samples from there), one from Alt-Inden, North Rhine Westphalia and four from Schleswig Rathausmarkt, Schleswig), and one from the Netherlands (Groningen). There were only two Y chromosomes from Scandinavia (Denmark) and neither was I1.

It as an archeological culture of highly mobile related people in constant contact built on sea trade around a small regional sea.
