Thanks xerxes. Looks like I land vey much in the middle of northwestern Europe. The French I inherited is closer to Brittany followed by the northern French areas of Calais and Nord? Am I to assume that the Afrikaner are the Dutch? How would those samples be different than the regular Dutch samples?

As Anglesqueville said, I think it's complicated to determine which French regions you come from from the G25 data. The fact that the Bretons are the closest to you among the French can probably be linked to the fact that the Bretons are a population closer to the British than to the average French. In all the calculations that I sent to you, I find that the modeling with 2 source populations 66% Scottish and 34% French from the North perhaps the most consistent according to your genealogy. The Afrikaners are indeed mainly from the Dutch but also have a small part of non-European ancestors.

On this collaborative site (https://www.exploreyourdna.com/listes.aspx), French academics (all greatparents born in same region) have deposited their G25 coordinates. The closest to you are the Bretons and Normans, who are genetically closest to the British.

Thanks so much Xerxes, this has been very helpful for me. From MyHeritage, my ethnicity results are: 51.8% North and West European, 28.1% Irish, Scottish, and Welsh, 16.7% Iberian, 3.4% Mesoamerican and Andean. My direct paternal line comes from Andalusia, Spain, which is why I am J2. The rest is very much American mix. As far as my regional genetic groups, they are mostly all within the southern United States and especially Mississippi and Louisiana, I dont have any genetic groups in Europe. Top 3 are Mississippi and Louisiana #1, Mississippi, and Mississippi and Louisiana #3.

If a lot of your ancestors came from western France, it might be very difficult to be able to differentiate between your French and British ancestry. My dad has a similar issue. Imho the best thing to look at, is your matches.

For reference purposes, my father is a quarter French (from a Huguenot community of which the most comes from western France) and currently has 163 French matches on MyHeritage. Most of them are actually coming from the same regions my dad has roots from.

Indeed, it would be interesting to get a look at your matches. On Myheritage there is a lot of French. What is the distribution by country of your matches on Myheritage?

Removing from the French "Academic" list those samples that traditionally overlap with the British Isles, and setting them 'against' the Irish, Scottish and English averages, this is what I get:

    Target: JCave_scaled -- Distance: 2.1841% / 0.02184110

    59.8 Irish
    20.8 72_Sarthe
    13.6 67_Bas-Rhin
    5.8 17_Charente-Maritime

Bear in mind that if you have ancestors from Normandy and/or Brittany, they are probably partly included in the Irish.

166 is not ridiculously low, considering how (comparatively) few French people have tested to date. Genetic testing is forbidden by the law in this country, save for forensic purposes. More and more people are testing, but though none of them has been prosecuted so far, every one of them is breaking the law. Consequence: for every thousand of people from the anglosphere who order a test, you get only a handful of Frenchies who do the same. Which is why your 166 matches can be seen as significant.
