Thread: 23andMe "Relative Finder" Results

I got my results at the end of October and have had around 1200 matches ever since, with just a few more or less from day to day. So the change must have been before that. I was very disappointed to have so few (especially since the vast majority of them are probably not very closely related to me anyway and just share common Ashkenazi Jewish DNA) and even more disappointed now I know there would have been more if I had done the test earlier. I think it is ridiculous that they can tell me that two of my matches, say Person A and Person B, share a small amount of DNA, but they don't let those people know. Surely that shows that they are doing it wrong.

They've updated their threshold. I emailed them asking why my relative count dropped from 600 to 200. That's what I got:
"To clarify, our segment matching threshold has been updated.

To be shown in your DNA Relatives list, a relative must have at least one segment of at least 9cM instead of our previous threshold of 7cM."

Something I just realized : my matches that were removed due to the threshold update are sometimes still visible in the "matches in common" section all the way down the page when I click on one of my remaining matches.

Over 1000 matches, with the vast majority of close matches coming from the exact same island in Greece from where my parents are from. I guess there's a little truth about everyone on a small island being related...

My number of matches seems to have gone up by more than 60 overnight, but when I sort by "Newest Relatives", I don't see names at the top who I haven't seen before, so I guess those who are new to me are hiding somewhere in the middle. Don't know how I would ever find them.

Unfortunately I couldn't use relative finder to find specifically how I'm related to any of my matches. The reason is that any of my matches with a connection to Kalymnos shares DNA with pretty much every other match with a connection to Kalymnos. But, I found this interesting one the other day:

My only match purely from Turkey, he has an Armenian name and claims all 4 grandparents are from Turkey. I only share 13cM (0.17%) with him, BUT I have one other relative that matches with him, which turns out to be a 1st cousin:

From his admixture comparison, it seems like he has no Italian/Greek ancestry, so would come from the eastern side of Turkey next to Armenia?

What are the odds that me and a 1st cousin would share the same distant match, and be the only one of my matches to do so? Can this be the result of randomness, or is there a good chance we share the same 4th/5th grandparent with this Turkish/Armenian individual?
