Interesting. Didn't know about these. Will have to look into them more deeply.

Do you feel this data is confirmation of that?

I think there's been more movement throughout history than people realize, so I try not to assume any population is static. But yeah, I think instances of repopulation of some islands might indeed have occurred from neighboring islanders that were already similar to the original population anyway.

Btw Michalis, did you update your Albanian database? I find the samples are not very representative for me personally. As a North Western Albanian, I'm a closer match to Akarnania/Aetolia, West Greek, etc. than to North Albanians.

I do have the new Albanian averages but I haven't incorporated them into the spreadsheet I'm running for these Greek sims yet (which is why you don't see them). After I'm done with these sims I'll get around to putting them in there, and they'll be in my next public averages update whenever I get around to posting that (some time after Southern Arc).

CYCLADIANS
Like the North Aegean, we currently don't have any real Cycladian G25 coords-- not even private ones, so collecting these was definitely of utmost interest for our project. There aren't too many out there yet, but enough exist to get a good idea of what the region is like generally. Below are seven individuals from Andros, one from Naxos, two from Paros, and one from Santorini (Thera/Thira). We should also be getting real Cycladian coords soon, presumably in the Danubian limes study's final publication. The Andros samples have the widest spread (dipping a bit into the transitional zone between East and Central Meds), but this might just be an artifact of that set having the most samples. The others are core East Meds.

CRETANS
There are plenty of real Cretan coords in the G25 already, but we couldn't resist looking for some more kits to supplement them. Below are a few generic Cretans, some from Chania, several from the east of the island, and two people of Cretan Muslim descent. And, yes, we looked for Sfakians, but couldn't find any. Not that I expect them to be too different from other Cretans anyway. There does seem to be a difference between Western and Eastern Crete, with the latter pulled closer to the West Asian side of the Med continuum than the former (represented by Chania).

We've been discussing for a while that I believe Samos (where my dad is from) has pockets of different east or west-leaning communities throughout the island. This wouldn't be so surprising given its history. This is mostly assumed due to the huge number of Chios matches I get (who show a very clear Chios genetic profile). We know there was a lot of migration between both islands over the years so I can't imagine I am the only Samiote who has so many Chios matches - unless there's an unknown great-grandparent+ from Chios I am unaware of!

Chios, Lesbos and Lemnos overlap completely with Crete, if I had to guess the latter are more similar to Western and Central Crete. The Ikariotes are in-between the Maniots and the Cretans, there's not much difference with Chios either. Fourni overlaps strongly with the Maniots and the Southern Tsakonians, meanwhile Samos is firmly Peloponnesian albeit slightly shifted towards the East Med. I'm not sure any of this directly supports or contradicts Chios' resettlement from neighbouring islands.

The Fourniotes seem to be more "Italian-like" within the East Med continuum, much like the Maniots and the Tsakonians, and are therefore closer to the LBA-IA Greeks on the PCA. Lesbos and Lemnos are artificially similar to Eastern Ashkenazim, this probably has to do with elevated steppe ancestry (possibly mediated via Slavic admixture), here are the distances for my father example:

Fourniotes have a strong and soupy IBD connection to Ikaria, almost certainly a founder effect from the resettlement of the island in the mid-19th century. Maybe the simplest explanation is that a West Med leaning portion of the Ikarian profile is the base of the Fourni profile (possibly centered around Evdilos in the north of Ikaria) plus added ancestry from Samos and the Mainland to pull the profile north. There is anecdotal evidence in my family tree and my cousin's Y test that would support this.

But really, we are probably looking at my four family samples + a cousin that is 1/2 Chiote. I can confirm other Fourniotes have the same IBD connection to Ikaria, but was never successful in getting these distant cousins to upload to GEDmatch or purchase G25.

Chania overlaps with Lesbos, Chios, Lemnos, Paros and Naxos as well as Andros while Crete_East overlaps with Chios, Ikaria, Kos, Santorini and Mani. No big surprises here. The Cretan Muslims are closer to Lemnos, though well within the original Cretan cluster (arguably, their profile is much more typical of Central-Western Crete). Andros OTOH is in-between North Tsakonia and Ikaria and overlaps with the Fourniotes, the Maniotes, the South Tsakonians and Samos (as well as Naxos and Paros), several of the more East Med Laconians seem similar as well.

I conclude my current exploratory project with the Dodecanese, Greek islanders who genetically bridge the rest of the Aegean to Cyprus. Although there is some variation between islands, Dodecanese overall are the least Slavic-admixed Greeks in the Balkan-Aegean theater. In my opinion they are a decent proxy for what most Greeks in Greece itself were like during the Roman era. Hopefully we will be able to say that for sure in the near future; Vranas Marathon is suggestive, but it is a singleton and might turn out to be an outlier in the long run. Thanks to 23abc's efforts, we have about 70 kits from the Dodecanese region. As a rule, people on these islands are endogamous; finding matches on Gedmatch is not difficult if you have someone to start with.

ASTYPALAIANS
In my view the island of Astypalaia would fit better as part of the Cyclades, but it's traditionally considered part of the Dodecanese chain. The first two Astypalaians below are definitely outlying (more steppe-rich) compared to the general Dodecanese set, while the third one is typical.

We move further south to Karpathos, the major island between Crete and Rhodes. I'm very familiar with Karpathians because they are well represented in my neighborhood. RHODIANS
Who doesn't love Rhodes? We do have some real G25 Rhodians coords already, but they aren't ideal because they are sourced from low res genomes, and as such show a wider spread than is probably realistic. There are two outliers (more steppe-rich) in the "real set" that might plot the way they do precisely because of this reason. Thankfully we have a handful of sims now, and they plot like the Symiots above. Rhodes, Symi, and Kastellorizo are the most West Asian-shifted islands in the Dodecanese, and as such connect the rest of the Aegean to Cyprus. As one can see in the PCA, there are no gaps between Europe and West Asia thanks to the East Med continuum, and Rhodes is an essential component in that chain.

KASTELLORIZANS
Kastellorizo (Megisti) is the easternmost island in the Dodecanese region. I was really excited to see some Kazzies finally, most of whom live in Australia now. There are lots of Aussie kits out there with Kastellorizan ancestry, but only two of them could be confirmed to be pure. They plot with the Rhodians and Symiots.
