Ancestry discontinuing Y & mt DNA testing and closing their databases this September.

I recieved notice today that Ancestry will discontinue selling new Y & mt DNA tests and will close down their database this September. They do plan to continue their autosomal tests. Hopefully other companies will step up to the plate and offer special transfer discounts so the data of those who only tested with Ancestry won't be lost.

What does this mean for the samples and data acquired from Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation? Will SMGF.org be maintained?

Man, that's too bad, they have the largest collection of genealogy and data other than the Mormon church in the US. it would have been awesome if they leveraged the Y and mtDNA data with all genealogy projects.

BTW - This is pure speculation, but perhaps the PE that owns Ancestry is vying for a buyout of ftDNA?

My understandin is they are getting back to their core business (genealogy) and focusing their DNA business on autosomal testing only. Right now there are a lot of questions being asked from many angles. What happens to the data of those who have died since taking the test? What happens to connections between different users which were created by attaching DNA to family lines in their trees on Ancestry? What becomes of the Sorenson data that was acquired by Ancestry? Hopefully Ancestry will provide answers and options for these and other questions.

Looks like FTDNA is accepting Y DNA transfers starting at $19. https://www.familytreedna.com/landin...-transfer.aspx

Here is a link to Ancestry's announcement:
    http://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2...ore-offerings/

If you visit the "LegacyDNA" FAQ at the bottom of this page, it does state that the Raw Data is available for downloading by the test owners.

From FTDNA's transfer page: "...you may now transfer your Y-DNA results from any company that used the Sorenson 33 or 46-marker test, and become a member of Family Tree DNA. This includes results from Ancestry.com, GeneTree, and Sorenson's SMGF."
