Since when was Mehri close to Akkadian? It is definitely closer to Ethio-Semitic languages than it is to Akkadian or Canaanite

It's neither because Modern Southern Arabian and Ethio-Semitic branches are not part of the Central Semitic branch like say Canaanite languages or Arabic. They're both independent West Semitic branches.

While the idea that the proto-Semitic homeland in the Southern Levant is spot on, the linguistic affiliations in the first picture is outdated as well. No such thing as a South Semitic branching, and that both Ethio-Semitic and MSA branches don't belong to the Central Semitic branch like Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic and etc.

The majority of Arab J1-Y3081 clades (i.e., J1-ZS8752 and J1-FGC58963) split from a common ancestor with the firmly Jewish lineage(s) (essentially all under J1-S20075) sometime during the fourth millennium BCE. As such their common ancestor lived during the period of Central or NW Semitic development and these Arab clades likely came from an earlier source, potentially with the expansion of groups such as the Amorites.
