New 23andMe British and Irish Genetic Groups

    Hi all,

23andMe have released a new feature called 'Genetic Groups', they appear to be focused along the same lines as the Genetic Communities that AncestryDNA has. At the moment, they have released new communities for the UK and Ireland and the Iberian Peninsula, see further detail here:
    https://blog.23andme.com/articles/23...irish-ancestry

I have just received my new Genetic Groups. See below:

    I have:

    1. Central Ireland and Northern Ireland - This seems to be essentially, Ulster.
    2. Ireland.
    3. North East England - County Durham and Northumberland.
    4. Scotland and Northern Ireland.

These align quite closely with the GC's I have in MyHeritage, less so with the AncestryDNA. I do not have the Scottish Lowlands here.

I'm slightly confused about the North East England community, I don't have any known ancestry from that region. I am not sure if that is down to immigration or something.

Per my family tree, my ancestry is 1/4 central England, 1/4 Cornwall, 1/4 Yorkshire/East Midlands, and the rest a mix of East Anglia, Kent, Sussex, Buckinghamshire.

There are my new results - seems to correlate fairly well with my written ancestry:

Hmm, yeah it's likely that it is due to Irish immigration to the North East which was definitely plentiful throughout the last 200 years. The close proximity to Scotland could also have an effect

I have Southwest England as a Highly Likely Match; a great-great-great-grandmother, Louisa Wilkins Colvin, was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. I also have a great-grandfather from Virginia, where many West Country Cavaliers settled.

Here's mine (my brother isn't on the latest chip, so he doesn't have this update) -

    England (Highly Likely Match)
Lancashire and West Yorkshire (Highly Likely Match) - I'm from Lancashire and a large part of my ancestry comes from various parts of the historical county of Lancashire.
West Lancashire and Merseyside (Highly Likely Match)
West Midlands (Highly Likely Match) - I have a small amount of ancestry from this region. I think my Cheshire and Gloucestershire ancestors, on the border with this region, probably affect it too.

I'm sorry but I don't see how these look more refined than the previous recent ancestor locations? I feel like it looks more broad and general.

It looks like they’ve given me a new Genetic Group. Which is the same one Ancestry gives me. Other than that, everything looks the same.

I don’t remember this but I could’ve missed it, too.

Edit: Apparently, they’re still rolling this out because they’ve added a new Genetic Group to my profile.

Scottish Lowlands and Southern Uplands of Scotland.

You are connected through shared ancestors to people from the Lowlands and Southern Uplands of Scotland. Hundreds of years of migration between Scotland and Northern Ireland resulted in genetic connections that span the North Channel in the Irish Sea. That's my feeling as well. How is the Genetic Group of "Ireland", as in the entire island, a refined result?

A little bit better. I'm also part Welsh but it isn't listed.
