Origins of later european settlements in Eastern North Carolina, USA

I've often wondered about the origins of an annual Polish festival in the Little town of Castle Hayne, near the coast of North Carolina. I discovered it origin this morning in a reprinted article in my local paper. We often speculate about the reasons for the movements of populations in pre-history, often citing environmental causes. Here is the story of an early 20th century migration caused by a single businessman who brought Italians, Poles, Hungarians and Hollanders to eastern North Carolina to farm land that Americans wouldn't touch, so he could have crops available for his trucking business to take to New York. There was/is also a very large Maronite (Lebanese) community in the same region at about the same time, composed of mostly merchants and their families. It is interesting to think of the genetic pool that was dropped down into the heart of what had been traditionally a Scot-English-Native American settled region. Link to Article can be found *HERE*

Castle Hayne and nearby Holly Ridge were once cosidered as the location for America's Space program, but Cape Canaveral won out. I remember spending summers at Topsail Island and learning about the history of the area, but I never heard about the farming colonies.
